[MUSIC NEWS] Lil Wayne Teases ‘Tha Carter V’ Album Cover

The wait for Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V may finally be coming to an end. Today (Sept. 12), Young Money’s Twitter account shared what purports to be the album’s new cover art.

The image features Weezy’s name and the album title next to an open palm, spotlit in red light, on which the words “The World” are written. Eight fire emojis trace the bottom of the frame. “Put them 5s up,” the account captioned the post.

It’s the first tangible sign in months that the album’s rollout may be in motion. Tunechi originally planned to drop the project in 2014, but months of delays ultimately led to the rapper suing Cash Money Records in order to leave the label and gain control over his catalog’s copyrights—a legal battle that was settled for an undisclosed amount this past May.

The following month, Lil Wayne told a nightclub crowd in Miami that he had recently held a meeting regarding the project’s release date. It’s unclear whether a date has been set.

As for what to expect from the album, Weezy released what was intended as a lead single back in 2014, “Believe Me,” featuring Drake and produced by Boi-1da and Vinylz. Lil Twist is also on record claiming that Mannie Fresh contributed production on the reported double-disc, which he described last August as “insane.”

Tha Carter IV dropped all the way back in 2011. Weezy’s last official releases were the mixtapes Dedication 6 and Dedication 6: Reloaded, which dropped this past December and January, respectively.

[MUSIC NEWS] Jay-Z, Diddy and Kendrick Lamar Top Forbes’ List of World’s Highest Paid Hip-Hop Acts

Forbes has released its annual listing of rap’s highest paid artists. For anyone that’s been following the genre, there aren’t many big surprises; still, the amount of money that’s being pulled in is staggering and only furthers the idea that rap is the most popular genre in the music industry at the moment. The second most glaring statistic to note: Women have been shut out of the upper echelon of the earning brackets.

Working down to the highest spot, we encounter Lil Wayne at No. 18 with $19 million, and he’s followed closely by Travis Scott’s $21 million at No. 15 (though I see that changing following the release of Astroworld). Chance the Rapper, known for his philanthropic ways in Chicago, snagged the No. 14 spot with a hefty $21.5 million. Despite his run of bad back-to-back albums, Eminem nearly cracks the top 10, earning $23 million and a No. 13 placing. DJ Khaled somehow makes $27 million (No. 11) on the strength of #majorkey catchphrases.

Within the top 10, mere half-millions separate some of the rap game’s hottest stars. Kanye West barely inches his way into this grouping with $27.5 million at No. 10. He’s followed by Future, Mr. Worldwide himself Pitbull, and Nas, who according to Forbes, is making his first-ever appearance on the list thanks to his various ownership stakes in Lyft, Genius, and Mass Appeal.

Dr. Dre, label master and Beats honcho, is at No. 6 with $35 million under his belt. J. Cole makes just a bit more ($35.5 million) to put him ahead at No. 5. Toronto’s hometown hero and new HBO executive producer Drake made $47 million to bring him to No. 4.

The top 3 is comprised of two hip-hop heavyweights and one that’s a bit of a surprise considering his relative inactivity in the studio. Top Dawg’s top dog Kendrick Lamar nabs the No. 3 spot with a whopping $58 million, while to slip into No. 2, Diddy drew in $64 million courtesy of his many beverage offerings. The top spot goes to Jay-Z, who is miles and miles in front of Diddy at $76.5 million. With business ventures in all facets of media and beyond, as well as a more than healthy music career alongside forever-partner Beyoncé, it’s a bit of a no brainer he’s claimed the throne.

[MUSIC NEWS] John Legend Becoming First Black Man to Win EGOT

John Legend entered prestigious company on Sunday night (Sept. 9) at the 2018 Creative Arts Emmys. Along with lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Weber, the singer took home the outstanding live variety special award for executive producing NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert. In doing so, Legend became the first Black man to have won Grammy, Oscar, Tony, and Emmy awards, otherwise known as the EGOT.

“We put so much love into this performance,” Legend said during his acceptance speech. “Even Jesus and Judas, a lot of their interaction was based on love, even there was some betrayal, even though there was some disappointment, and we put so much love into this and I’m so happy that we were able to do this and that you all love it so much and honored our show.”

For their work on NBC’s remake of Weber and Rice’s original 1970 rock opera, which was broadcast live on April 1, the trio became the 13th, 14th and 15th EGOT-ers in history. In addition to producing, Legend starred as Jesus Christ in the production.

The “Ordinary People” singer acknowledged the weight of the moment on Instagram in a caption for a photo featuring him alongside Weber and Rice. “So happy to be part of this team. So honored they trusted me to play Jesus Christ. So amazed to be in such rarefied air. #EGOT,” Legend wrote.

Legend has won 10 Grammy Awards. He pulled an Oscar for best original song in 2015 for “Glory,” featured in Ava DuVernay’s film Selma, and a Tony in 2017 as co-producer of the best revival of a play-winning production, Jitney.

Past EGOT winners include Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks and Whoopi Goldberg. After the news broke, rappers and producers jumped online to pay their respects.

[MUSIC NEWS] Mac Miller’s Cause of Death to Be Determined Pending Toxicology Results

Mac Miller’s tragic death was first reported Friday (Sept. 7) by TMZ, which described the 26-year-old’s passing as an “apparent overdose.” That determination remains unconfirmed after a completed autopsy, Associated Press reports.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner said today (Sept. 10) that an autopsy was performed and Miller’s body was released to his family, but investigators are waiting for the results of a full toxicology report before determining the cause of death. The announcement could take weeks or months, according to AP.

TMZ reported additional details about the investigation over the weekend. Per the outlet’s law enforcement sources, police officers recovered a small amount of white powder when searching Miller’s home, but they believe the house was “swept clean” before they arrived.

Dozens of musicians have mourned and paid tribute to the rapper and producer born Malcolm McCormick in the days following his death. Childish Gambino, Elton John, Drake and more dedicated performances to Miller over the weekend.

In a statement Friday, Miller’s family released a statement thanking fans for their support and requesting privacy. “He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans,” they wrote. “Thank you for your prayers.”

[MUSIC NEWS] Drake Brings Out Meek Mill at Aubrey Boston Show

Back in May, Meek Mill told the world that his beef with Drake was officially over. Now, it appears as though Drake has officially confirmed that statement as well.

The ‘Scorpion’ rapper brought out Meek during the Boston leg of his Aubrey & the Three Migos tour Saturday night, much to the surprise of an excited TD Garden crowd. Meek opened the performance with one of his most popular hits, ‘Dreams and Nightmares.’

This performance marks the first time the two rappers have shared a stage since the beef.

We were first tipped off to the surprise appearance through an Instagram post by Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin, a close friend of the Philly native. Rubin shared an image of Meek’s wrist brandishing a watch, and his Aubrey & the Three Migos credentials. The Sixers co-owner supported Meek closely during the rapper’s time in prison.

Back in 2015, Meek went after Drake, accusing him of hiring ghostwriters to write his songs. Drake relentlessly went after Meek after that, with a host of diss tracks and memes.

2018 has been a pretty interesting year for Meek. After he was released from prison in April, the entertainer has become a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform. Rubin, with help from Meek, will be creating a “major foundation” that will be focused primarily on reforming the criminal justice system.

After his release, Meek took the stage in a surprise appearance at the 2018 Rolling Loud Festival in Miami. The festival, which took place in May, was Meek’s first major performance since his release from prison.

“Some people are chosen to go through storms, to overcome storms, to help other people in situations,” DJ Khaled told the Rolling Loud crowd before Meek’s grand entrance. “Some people have dreams, some people have nightmares, some people just got to go through a lot of shit. But the key is to overcome. It’s about overcoming, moving forward, and representing love.”

[MUSIC NEWS] Kanye West ‘Watch the Throne 2’ Album COMING SOON ????

It looks like we could be getting a new Watch the Throne album after all—at least according to Kanye West. Today (Sept. 8), out of nowhere, the G.O.O.D. Music boss tweeted that Watch the Throne 2, which would in theoretically be a sequel to an LP he and Jay-Z put out seven years ago, is on the way.

In the tweet, Kanye wrote, “throne2 coming soon.” Obviously there aren’t a lot of details, but this should definitely give hope to folks who’d long since given up on the idea of a new Hov and Yeezy album. After all, a lot has happened since they dropped their first joint project all the way back in 2011.

In the time since the release of the LP, Jay-Z’s wife Beyonce has given birth to three children. In that same period of time, Kanye and his wife Kim Kardashian West have welcomed three children of their own.

In a note that applies more to a potential reunion of The Throne, ‘Ye and Hov have had their fair share of issues. About two falls ago, Kanye called out Jay-Z during a concert. A short time later, Yeezy was hospitalized after suffering “temporary psychosis due to sleep deprivation and dehydration.”

Hov eventually addressed Yeezy’s mid-concert rant about him on his 2017 album, 4:44. On “Kill Jay Z,” a standout from the LP, Hov claims to have let Kanye borrow $20 million before Yeezy directed a mid-concert rant at him a short while later.

On the track, Hov spits, “But this ‘fuck everybody’ attitude ain’t natural/But you ain’t the same, this ain’t KumbaYe/But you got hurt because you did cool by ‘Ye/You gave him 20 million without blinkin”/He gave you 20 minutes on stage, fuck was he thinkin’?”

Since then, though, Kanye and Hov have seemingly patched things up. Is that enough for the release of a Watch the Throne sequel? Does Jay-Z have to be involved for the project o be a proper sequel project? Would Yeezy do another Throne album with anyone but Hov? We’ll just have to wait and see.

[MUSIC NEWS] Eminem ‘Kamikaze’ First Week Sales

UPDATE 4 (Sept. 7): After the projections steadily increased throughout the week, we now have the final numbers. Kamikaze sold 410,672 copies first week with 249,827 of those as pure sales. This is a whopping 145k more than Revival did first week last year. Congrats!

UPDATE 3 (Sept. 7): Here we go again with another bump. The album is now set to move over 400k copies in the first week. It’s clear that the audience has spoken. Stay tuned for final total on Sunday.

UPDATE 2 (Sept. 4): There is another new update on Kamikaze‘s sales projections. The numbers have increased quite significantly. The album is now set to sell 365k385k copies first week with 220k-235k of those as pure sales.

UPDATE (Sept. 3): Now that we’re a little further into the week, we have some more orecise sales projections for Eminem’s new album. He is set to sell 290k330k copies of Kamikaze with 155-170k of those as pure sales. If he were to hit that mark, he’d beat his Revival first week.

No one was expecting a new album from Eminem this week but it happened and he has certainly delivered. Fans on Twitter are calling Kamikaze his best effort since The Eminem Show but that might be a reach.

The album has been out for more than a day so we have an early read at the first week sales projections. HDD reports that Kamikaze is looking good for 200k plus units at the moment but with the holiday weekend hitting, it is tough to give out a more specific number. It’s currently the number 1 album on Apple music and occupies 10 out of the top 13 spots on the songs chart. On Spotify U.S, he has the top 3 songs with ‘Lucky You’ featuring Joyner Lucas leading at 2.6 million streams on the first day.

It will be interesting to see if Kamikaze is able to beat the 267k sales of his last album Revival which was panned by critics. Last night, Em’s longtime manager Paul Rosenberg clarified that the rapper did not diss Drake on the album.

[MUSIC NEWS] RZA Will Produce New Ol’ Dirty Bastard Biopic

Thanks to Sony’s Columbia Pictures and RZA (who will serve as producer), legendary Wu-Tang Clan member Ol’ Dirty Bastard will get his own biopic.

As one of the most polarizing members of the State Island crew, ODB not only built his profile through the Wu, but also on his own. In 1995, he released the classic Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, earning a GRAMMY nomination for best rap album.

But everything wasn’t always good for the eccentric rapper. Ol’ Dirty had plenty of legal trouble and he saw time in jail after multiple arrests, racking up charges that included drug possession and assault. There were many legendary stories during his time in the spotlight, like the time he fled from rehab as a fugitive and picked up a welfare check in a limo.

Unfortunately, his life ended tragically when he overdosed in 2004.

The upcoming film does not have a name but production is underway and more details should surface as things become more concrete.

[MUSIC NEWS] Post Malone: ‘God Must Hate Me’ After Being Involved In A Hollywood Auto Wreck

Whether or not you believe in a higher power, you have to admit that Post Malone‘s got plenty of reasons to wonder if someone’s out to get him lately. Just two weeks ago, he was involved in a scary situation when mechanical equipment failed on his flight, and just last night, escaped unscathed from a car crash in West Hollywood. He’s been either extremely lucky or extremely unlucky, but as they say in show biz, “The show must go on.”

According to TMZ, the “Better Now” rapper was riding passenger in his Rolls-Royce around three in the morning when a Kia collided with the front end of his car, spinning it around. According to TMZ’s sources, no drugs or alcohol were involved and Post felt decent enough to hit a house party nearby with Trippie Redd, whose debut album, Life’s A Trip, recently bowed at No. 4 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart its first week.
