We’ve seen numerous biopics in the last year, but what can be better than one about rapper Roxanne Shante? This one will be screening at Sundance documenting 14-year-old Shante’s shante-sm rise to fame during the 80’s. The cast includes Chanté Adams, Mahershala Ali, Nia Long, Elvis Nolasco, Kevin Phillips, and Shenell Edmonds.

The female phenom gained her fame by writing a response to UTFO’s hit, “Roxanne Roxanne.”

The ‘she-spitta’ named her song “Roxanne’s Revenge” produced by Marley Marl, and blasted her viewpoint of the woman being pursued in the song, starting roxanneshante-2what is known as the “Roxanne Wars,” where another female rapper called The Real Roxanne dissed Shante.

Most notably, the famed Queensbridge emcee dissed KRS-One with this infamous line, “Now KRS-ONE, you should go on vacation / With that name sounding like a wack radio station.” Shanté released two albums on Cold Chillin Records before leaving the rap game to pursue her college education.
