TampaMystic sits down w/ ZayReal for an exclusive interview
[box_dark]1. What’s going on? Please introduce yourself and tell us where you’re from.[/box_dark] I go by the name of ZayReal. I’m a MC from Staten Island, NY now residing in Augusta, GA. Thanks for having me
[box_dark]2. When did you start rapping and who or what inspired you?[/box_dark] Well I first started rapping back in 2008. I put my first mixtape out on January 28th that year. Since then I’ve put out 7 mixtapes and 2 albums. Really I get my inspiration from anything and anyone. It could be something I see on tv, a story someone told me or something I’ve read somewhere. But artist wise I listen to Eminem, Slaughterhouse, Jay-Z, Fabolous, 50 Cent, guys like that who inspire me to either go out there and destroy something lyrically or tell a story with substance.
[box_dark]3. As an up and coming artist, do you find it difficult to maintain personal relationships while pursuing your music career?[/box_dark] I know that’s something a lot of aspiring artist have a problem with but I feel blessed to not have that problem. I have an amazing support system from my wife, to my family and friends. My kids are a big inspiration to me also and they give me the motivation to go out there and reach for that brass ring. I want to be able to give them things I never had growing up and show them things very few are lucky enough to see in their life.
[box_dark]4. Tell us something you enjoy doing [besides music] that most people don’t know.[/box_dark] Well it might seem like it is and I hide it well, but music isn’t my main job. I’m also a firefighter/EMT. I love my job. It’s a great feeling being able to help people when they need it most. We see people on the worse days of their lives sometimes and its our job to guide them through it and get them out safely on the other side. At least I know that if this music thing didn’t work out I’m still doing something I love so it’s a win-win situation for me and I’m blessed for it.
[box_dark]5. Currently, what project(s) are you working on?[/box_dark] At this moment I’m currently working on 2 projects. I’m working on a 5-6 track EP with one of my partners in rhyme and producer, JoppaDaGreat. The title of that project is “The Really Great EP” you can expect that to be out by May/June. Then I’m working on my next solo album titled “Before I Forget”. I went with that title because there’s a lot of storytelling throughout the album. It gives you a glimpse into my life and shows you some of the things I’ve been through since the last album. I want to get all of these thoughts/opinions and stories out “Before I Forget”. It’s a great body of work and I can’t wait for yall to hear it. That will be out later this year around Oct/Nov. My first single “Laugh Harder” ft Rich Bueno will be out next month so be on the lookout for that.
[box_dark]6. What’s been the most memorable moment so far in your music career?[/box_dark] Man, So much has happened in such a short period of time it’s kind of hard to pick. I’d probably say the most memorable moment was a fan contacting me and telling me how my music has had such a big impact on their life and that it’s got them through some tough times and gave them the strength to keep pushing through it. It’s crazy the effect music has on people and their moods and thought process. I’m just glad I make music that effects people in such a positive way like that. It’s a great feeling and kind of reassuring that you’re doing something right and just motivates you to keep doing what you’re doing and even turn the notch up a bit.
[box_dark]7. What are your goals musically for 2014? [/box_dark]I’d say my goals this year are to hopefully get my single to chart and grab some attention. Gain more fans and exposure, do more shows, shoot a few video’s. I want this album to do well and people definitely need to hear it. It’s a breath of fresh air from the usual that we’re constantly exposed to on the radio, in the clubs and on the internet. Basically just continue the hustle and network with people all over and hopefully get the attention of someone important in the process lol I’d also like to work with some major artists so maybe we can make that happen.
