[INTERVIEW] “THE BRICK CITY PRINCESS” YASMEEN

As a Dj you know that I have to keep my ear to the streets for that next banger, and while on instgram I came across a track called “I SHINE” from a female MC named Yasmeen by way of Newark, New Jersey. The track is featuring North Carolina artist Dj Luke Nasy and is currently heating up the internet and social media. I reached out to Yasmeen via email to find out more about the artist….

Who are your musical influences?

“Tupac, Nas, Nicki Minaj and Young Jeezy.”

How does it feel to be on the for front for female MC’s in N.J.?

“I feel like I’m not getting the true recognition that I deserve but, if their not gonna give it to me I’m gonna take it.” LOL

What was your start into the music industry?

“Honestly, I was doing a photo shoot and this producer was playing this beat in the other room and I walked in like I think I can write something dope to that beat. It was on from there.”

Who was your hero growing up?

“My mother has always been my hero.”

What do you want your fans get out of your music?

“Realness, not this fake reality shit but just real life shit people been through or are going through.”

How did the collaboration with Dj Luke Nasty come about?

“I have a very close relationship with his manager, Waleed Coyote and he always thought I was a dope rapper so he set it up and we made a hit.”

What are some important lessons you’ve learned in this industry?

“That the industry for women is based on degrading yourself and selling yourself short. It’s based on popularity and not talent. The industry don’t love nobody.”

How does it feel to be finally getting your recognition?

“I haven’t really felt it yet I need to see more.”  LOL

What’s next on your agenda as far as music goes?

“Working on this EP with my brother Spazo and dropping my new single. And of course the video with DJ Luke Nasty.”

Any artists you would like to work with but haven’t yet?

“Nicki Minaj, Jeezy and Fabolous.”

What’s one thing you would like to share about yourself that a lot of people don’t know?

“A lot of people don’t know that I am a homebody.”

What’s your take on the rap game now being that then South has a strong hold on the rap scene?

“The South always shows me love so I’m not even mad.”

Anything you would like to say to your fans out there?

“I want to say thanks for the continued support and I’ll only get better just stick with me.”
