1. What is your name ? When did you first realize DJing was more  than just a hobby for you?

My name is DJ Baby Blue Diamond. Although, in time I realized DJing was more than a hobby when I started dropping my chopped and screwed mixes back in 2011. People actually connected with it.
Once I saw people tuning in, requesting music, and supporting consistently. I knew this was something bigger.

2. What inspired you to become a DJ?

Because , my siblings played a lot of DJ Screw growing up, and that sound stayed with me. Afterwards, taught myself how to chop and screw. Instantly, that turned into a passion. Also wanted to create a platform for underground artists who don’t always get the spotlight.

3. How would you describe your DJ style and sound?

Hence, my style is versatile but rooted in chopped and screwed culture. Generally mix hip hop, R&B and underground music. Fourthly , focus on creating a vibe more than just playing songs.

4. What separates you from other DJs in your city or region?

Furthermore, don’t just DJ, presently build platforms. However, from my radio shows to interviews and magazines, I help artists expand their exposure. I also bring that chopped and screwed element that not everybody else is doing.

5. Are you more of a crowd-reader or do you plan your sets in advance?

Additionally, I’m definitely a crowd reader. May have an idea going in, but will adjust based on the energy in the room.

6. What’s one record that always moves the crowd for you?

“Swag Surfin” is always a go-to. No matter where I’m at, it gets people moving.

7. What has been your biggest career milestone so far?

Basically, one of my biggest milestones is building over 200 radio episodes and interviewing artists like Lil Flip. Certainly creating multiple platforms like U3 and my magazines.

8. How do you stay current with new music and trends?

Comparatively, stay tapped in with underground artists, social media, and what’s buzzing in the streets. Listen to what people are actually playing, not just what’s trending online.

9. What advice would you give to new DJs entering the industry?

Indeed , stay consistent and do not wait on opportunities. Create your own platform and build your brand.

10. How important is branding and image in today’s DJ culture?

Henceforth, branding is everything. People should recognize you before you even touch the turntables.

11. Have you ever had to recover from a technical issue during a live set? What happened?

Yes, I’ve had moments where equipment didn’t work properly. You just stay calm, keep the crowd engaged, and fix it . The key is not letting the crowd feel the panic..

12. Are you a controller DJ or turntable purist?

I’m more of a controller DJ. I use Serato and focus on clean transitions, BPM matching, and creating a smooth vibe. My setup is simple but effective, I just need my controller, laptop, and great sound.

13. What type of events do you specialize in? (Clubs, radio, festivals,
private events, tours, etc.) I do a mix of everything: parties, lounges, school events, and showcases.

I like environments where I can control the vibe and connect with the crowd.

14. What legacy do you want to leave in the DJ community?

 I want to be known for opening doors for others and creating platforms that help artists grow.

From Mixtapes to the Formula 1 Podium: Spin Talk With DJ Koolaid

Chris Davis has been immersed in music his whole life, long before anyone called him DJ Koolaid. He spent his youth burning CDs with the latest tracks and blasting them from his car. He studied Funkmaster Flex, DJ Clue, and DJ Jazzy Jeff. He made mixtapes before he ever touched a controller. By the time he played his first real set in 2007, the foundation was already there.

Now based in Qatar, Koolaid navigates yacht parties, Dhow cruises, and club nights, forging his own path in a diverse scene with high expectations. Last year, he stood behind the decks as the Formula 1 podium DJ for the entire weekend. We spoke with him about craft, gear, and what it takes to captivate a crowd of five cultures.

The Come Up

When did you realize DJing had become more than a hobby?

When people started asking me to do events. I had put out some mixtapes and people wanted more. I was getting bookings. I was confident, maybe a little too confident at the time, honestly, but that’s when I knew it was turning into something real.

Who were the DJs that shaped you early on?

DJ Clue, Funkmaster Flex, DJ Jazzy Jeff, those are the ones that did it for me. When I was younger, I was always making tapes and CDs with the newest music and playing them in my car. I acted like I had the plug on everything. That instinct was always there. But I didn’t actually step up and do it until 2007, when I played a set through iTunes at a party. That was the start.

Sound, Style, and Reading the Room

How would you describe your sound?

Old School is the foundation, the ’70s through the early 2000s. As an Old School R&B DJ at heart, I pull from R&B, Hip Hop, Reggae, and Dancehall, then layer in newer music to keep the energy current. I want to bring that radio DJ energy to every set, someone who connects people through the music, not just plays songs back to back.

What makes you different from other DJs in your market?

I take the audience on a journey. I play for every age group I can see in the room. And here in Qatar, the crowd is genuinely mixed, American, African, British, Arab, Asian. Putting together a multicultural DJ set isn’t optional here; it’s the job. You have to cover multiple genres in a single night just to keep everyone engaged.

Do you plan your sets or go by feel?

Both. I put together a playlist going in, but I usually end up going off it once I’m in the room. The playlist gives me a starting point. After that, I’m reading the crowd and freestyling the set.

What record always moves people for you?

It depends on the night and the room. At a Sip and Soul brunch, ’80s R&B consistently gets people going, throw in some older Trap, and you’ve got the room. On a Hip Hop and R&B club night, deep Trap cuts work, and I’ll layer in Afrobeats and Dancehall. This area is multicultural. You can’t sit under one genre all night and expect to hold the crowd.

What’s the biggest moment in your career so far?

DJing for Formula 1 in Qatar. I was the Formula 1 podium DJ for the weekend. That’s still the standout for me.

The Setup

Walk us through your gear.

Pioneer DDJ-Rev 7 and a MacBook Pro M1 16-inch. I can DJ on turntables, but I’m not a purist; I’m still learning the craft and always will be. The controller and the laptop are what I need on stage.

Have you ever dealt with a technical failure during a live set?

Yes. My external hard drive stopped working mid-set. The whole system locked up, so I had to reboot my laptop and controller. A friend grabbed the mic and kept the crowd going while I got everything back online. The cause turned out to be the subwoofer sitting right next to the booth; the vibration shook the drive until it crashed.

The Business Side

How do you stay on top of new music?

Satellite radio, other DJs, and word of mouth. People close to me keep me in the loop, too. I stay open to wherever the information comes from.

How much does branding matter in DJ culture right now?

It matters a lot and that’s true for any business. If your image or reputation is off, you’re not getting new clients. Your brand does the advertising for you. When people see your logo, they already know what to expect.

What are your DJ tips for beginners coming up in the industry?

Master the basics before you try to jump into the scene. It makes a real difference later when you’re developing your own style. Get the fundamentals down first.

Life and Events in Qatar

What events do you focus on in Qatar?

Private events mostly, yacht parties, Dhow parties, house parties, and club nights. A Dhow is a traditional boat specific to this region. Those events have a whole different feel.

What legacy are you trying to leave?

I want people to know me as a great DJ and a reliable one. I’m also teaching people here the basics of DJing. Once they get that down, I tell them they have to find their own style and grow from there. That’s the only way to get better.

What’s Next for DJ Koolaid

What should people be watching for from you?

Events were on pause during Ramadan; that’s the reality in an Islamic country. I’ll be back in the clubs after March 20th. I’m also working on building out my brand on TikTok and YouTube, and a website is in the works.

What was the exact moment DJing shifted from a hobby to a passion for you?

Most of all, what started as a hobby evolved into a fully established entertainment brand, solidifying the commitment to excellence in sound, presentation, and event production.
All in all, expanding the vision beyond other live events. DJ Chico formed Prosoundz Radio, an international and national platform bringing together talent from across the United States and abroad.
The network features DJs representing New York, Florida, New Jersey, Texas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Washington, Boston, and Connecticut, and having international representation from France and Puerto Rico.

What inspired you to become a DJ?

I was inspired to become a DJ by my cousin, who was serving in the Army and stationed in Hawaii at the time. Watching his dedication to the craft, his discipline, and the way he could move a crowd through music left a lasting impression on me. The passion of being a DJ showed that it’s more to it. Not just playing songs. It was about creating energy, setting a mood, and bringing people together. That inspiration ultimately sparked my own journey into DJing and laid the foundation for the career I’ve built today.

How would you describe your DJ style and sound?

 I pride myself on the ability to seamlessly blend multiple genres and eras of music, creating an experience that connects with diverse audiences. From Hip-Hop, R&B, Latin, Afro beats, Dance hall, House, and Top 40, I read the crowd and curate the right sound for the moment.  As an Open Format DJ, versatility is my strength. I focus on clean transitions, precise mixing, creative blends, and high-energy sets that keep the dance floor engaged from start to finish. A corporate event, wedding, private celebration, restaurant, and nightlife setting, the goal is always the same: to deliver the right vibe at the right time.

What separates me from other DJs in my city and region is my ability to think beyond the individual brand and build a platform that creates opportunities for others.

I am primarily a crowd-reader. I always come prepared with music and a structured direction for the event; I believe the true art of DJing lies in understanding the energy of the room. Reading the crowd allows me to adjust in real time. Means extending a genre, switching tempos, and introducing a different vibe. Every audience is different, and my ability to adapt ensures that the experience feels organic, engaging, and memorable from start to finish

What’s one record that always moves the crowd for you

As an Open Format DJ, that’s a tough question; there isn’t just one record. I move through multiple genres depending on the crowd and the energy in the room. What works at a wedding may differ from a nightclub, corporate event, or restaurant vibe.  For me, it’s never about one guaranteed song, it’s about understanding the audience and knowing which record at the right moment will shift the entire atmosphere. That’s the advantage of being an Open Format DJ. I can pivot from Hip-Hop to Latin, R&B to Dance, Classics to current hits, and keep the floor packed. 

Career Growth and Industry Insight

What is your biggest career milestone?  

Owning and operating an independent online radio station is a significant milestone that demonstrates a unique blend of technical expertise and creative leadership. The achievement represents love for broadcasting. It reflects the ability to build a digital platform from the ground up, navigating the complexities of audio engineering, server management, and content licensing. By successfully launching this venture. I have proven my capability to manage the end-to-end logistics of a media business. Maintaining a consistent brand identity.  

Beyond the technical requirements, this milestone highlights my skills in audience engagement and content strategy. Curating a continuous stream of programming that resonates with a global listener base requires a deep understanding of market trends and listener psychology. Managing this station has sharpened my ability to adapt to a rapidly evolving digital landscape.  

The platform is relevant and competitive. A crowded media market. This experience has been a masterclass in entrepreneurship and resilience. Taking a concept from an initial idea to a live, functioning broadcast entity involved overcoming numerous hurdles, from troubleshooting stream stability to building a loyal community of listeners. My proudest professional achievement showcases my initiative, my dedication to high-quality production, and my passion for connecting people through the power of audio. 

How do you stay current with new music and trends? 

Listening to other DJs is one of the most effective ways to stay current. It allows you to 
see how music “functions” in a live environment. It’s not just about hearing the track,  
it’s about observing the timing. The crowd’s energy and the creative ways a peer might transition between genres. 

It’s never about one guaranteed song  it’s about understanding the audience and knowing which record at the right moment will shift the entire atmosphere.

What advice would you give to new DJs entering the industry?

Networking isn’t just a “business” task in the music industry; it is the actual lifeblood of a DJ’s career. Relationships lead to opportunities vs talent alone.

Power of Community 

The most vital piece of advice for any new DJ is to prioritize building a genuine network. The industry thrives on word-of-mouth and mutual support. Most of all, staying connected with as many fellow DJs as possible is essential. Immerse yourself in the community. That’s through local club scenes, online forums, or radio collectives. You create a support system where you can exchange ideas, share technical tips, and stay informed about upcoming opportunities. A strong network ensures you are not operating in a vacuum, just growing alongside your peers. 

Creating Mutual Value 

Networking is a two-way street that benefits everyone involved. When building relationships with other DJs, you aren’t just looking for your own “big break”. You are creating a collaborative ecosystem where you can recommend others for gigs and receive referrals in return. This culture of reciprocity is how scenes are built and how genres evolve. By being a connector for others, you establish yourself as a reliable and professional figure in the industry. Which naturally opens doors for your own career growth.

 Your technical skills will get you the gig, and your relationships will keep you in the booth. New DJs should focus on being present and supportive of others’ sets. These face-to-face interactions often lead to collaborative projects, guest spots on radio stations, or even joint event promotions. How important is branding and image in today’s DJ culture?

Branding in the DJ culture isn’t optional anymore; it’s essential. Someone like me owning Pro Soundz Radio, recruiting DJs, creating mix shows, and being involved in multiple platforms. Branding is what separates a DJ who plays music from a DJ who builds a movement. Pro Soundz Radio is a brand that makes DJs feel they’re joining something structured and official, not random.

Equipment, Experience, and Events

Did you ever have to recover from a technical issue on a live set?  What happened?

Maintaining reliable audio performance is essential for any mobile DJ setup. In one instance, a speaker malfunction was quickly resolved by replacing a faulty XLR cable. Highlighting the importance of regularly inspecting connections and components. Keeping equipment updated and carrying backup gear is critical for mobile events. Ensuring continuity of service and minimizing potential disruptions with live performance. 

Are you a controller DJ or turntable purist? Break down your full setup and the gear you can’t perform without. 

I began my DJ career in 1991, performing on Technics 1200 turntables. Developed my foundation in vinyl mixing and traditional DJ techniques. As technology evolved and transitioned into the digital space, Denon CD mixers emerged. Followed by Pioneer CDJs, which allowed me to expand my performance versatility and music delivery. 

Today, my primary setup centers around the Pioneer DDJ-REV5 controller, supporting my open-format style and mobile event workflow. For sound reinforcement, I rely on QSC and RCF speaker systems. Recognized for clarity and reliability. Performances and live events. Mobile DJ environments. This progression reflects my adaptability to industry advancements. Maintaining a strong technical foundation. Commitment to delivering high-quality audio experiences.

I specialize in providing professional DJ services for corporate events, weddings, Sweet 16celebrations, and private functions throughout the Tri-State area. In addition to private and formal events. I maintain an active presence in the nightlife scene. Performing regularly in restaurants, bars, and clubs, where I deliver versatile, high-energy sets tailored to diverse audiences and venues.

What legacy do you want to leave in the DJ community? 

I want my legacy in the DJ community to be defined by consistency, mentorship, and cultural impact. Through my work as a DJ, radio programmer, and platform owner with Pro Soundz Radio and my affiliated networks, I strive to create opportunities for DJs to showcase their talent, expand their reach, and grow professionally. I would like to be remembered as someone who didn’t perform at a high level. Along with corporate events, nightlife, and private celebrations. I helped build platforms that amplified other DJs and contributed to the culture. Legacy is leaving the DJ community stronger than I found it. By sharing knowledge. Opening doors, maintaining professionalism, and preserving the artistry of DJing for the next generation.

  • Marvelous Blends Mixtape 2026 – A collaborative mixtape project featuring multiple 
    talented DJs, showcasing diverse styles, seamless transitions, and high-level mixing. 
  • Expanding into Connecticut’s Nightlife Scene, gradually establishing a presence within. 
    Connecticut’s nightlife market, with appearances at Te Amo Tequila restaurant and 80 Proof restaurant, is building brand recognition and audience engagement. 
  • Official DJ Sunday Brunch Residency Travesías Restaurant (Bronx, NY). Serving as a resident DJ at Travesías Restaurant in the Bronx. Delivering curated music experiences that enhance the venue’s atmosphere and guest experience.

Spin Talk With Dj Undaground

Ray Pinnock, better known as DJ Undaground, didn’t learn DJing in a classroom or a studio. It started in Hartford’s Charter Oak neighborhood, where block parties turned into lessons and the DJs running the turntables controlled the entire atmosphere. Watching that kind of command over a crowd stuck with him early.

Years later, that curiosity turned into a career built on repetition, mentorship, and long nights behind the decks. From learning under DJs like Mike O’Neil, Chris Carpenter, and Reggie Roman to refining his skills in San Diego with DJ Kool T, DJ Dizzy D, and DJ Fingaz, Undaground treated the craft like something that had to be earned.

Thirty years later, the résumé stretches far beyond those early block parties. Weddings, corporate galas, festivals, and mixtape culture have all become part of his lane, along with national recognition as a Rolling Stone America’s Top Hitmaker finalist and a performance during Super Bowl LVII. The settings may change, but the approach stays the same: control the room, respect the music, and never treat the job like background noise.

Straight Official caught up with DJ Undaground to talk about the early influences, the discipline behind the work, and what keeps him pushing forward after three decades in the game.

Beginnings and Early Influence

Who are you, and when did this become more than a hobby?
I’m Ray Pinnock, the world knows me as DJ Undaground. This didn’t start in a studio. It started in Hartford, in the Charter Oak neighborhood. Sneaking out to block parties and watching DJs control the whole neighborhood with two turntables and raw skill. That’s where I caught the bug. I learned from DJ Mike O’Neil early on. Later, we moved to Deltona, where I sharpened my skills under Chris Carpenter and Reggie Roman. Then San Diego changed everything. I leveled up learning from DJ Kool T, DJ Dizzy D, and DJ Fingaz. That’s where the craft became surgical: timing, blends, control, and presence. Those guys? I owe them. That’s when I knew this wasn’t just a hobby. This was destiny.

What inspired you?
Hip-hop culture. Mixtapes. DJs who didn’t just play records, they broke records. The DJ is the backbone. Without the DJ, there is no culture.

Performing during Super Bowl LVII stamped it. But honestly, surviving 30 years in this game with integrity is the real milestone.

Style and Energy

How would you describe your style?
Calculated chaos. I can rock a wedding ballroom, flip a corporate gala, then host a mixtape that feels like a street cypher. My sound is hip-hop at the core, but I move through R&B, Afrobeats, Latin, reggae, and open format without losing control of the room. I don’t press play. I command energy.

What separates you from other DJs?
Longevity. Discipline. Respect for the craft. Anybody can download a controller. Everybody can’t control a room for five hours straight and keep it packed. From 2011 to 2026, I’ve stayed recognized as one of Texas’ top wedding and events DJs. That’s not hype. That’s consistency in one of the toughest markets in the country.

Performance & Crowd Control

Are you more of a crowd reader or someone who plans sets?
Both. If it’s a wedding, structure is law. If it’s a mixtape or live set, I read the temperature and adjust like a surgeon.

What’s one record that always moves the crowd?
“Before I Let Go.” When that record drops, generations connect. No debate.

Have you ever had to recover from technical issues during a live set?
Of course. Laptops freeze. Power drops. Cables fail. That’s why professionals have backups for their backups. The crowd should never know that something went wrong.

Career Milestone and Industry Perspective

What has been your biggest milestone so far?
Being named a 2024/2025 America’s Top Hitmaker finalist through Rolling Stone put my production on a national stage. My YouTube productions have also surpassed 500,000 views, showing the sound travels. Performing during Super Bowl LVII stamped it. But honestly, surviving 30 years in this game with integrity is the real milestone.

How do you stay current with music and trends?
I don’t chase trends, I study them. Charts, underground records, producers, and DJs nationwide. I stay plugged in.

What advice would you give to new DJs entering the industry?
Respect the craft. Learn transitions, the business, the contracts, and the sound. Clout fades. Skill doesn’t.

How important is branding in today’s DJ culture?
If you don’t control your image, somebody else will define it for you. Branding matters, but it better matches your skill level.

Equipment and Production

Are you a controller DJ or a turntable purist? What’s your setup?
Turntables built the culture. Today I run a professional controller system with Serato, a backup laptop, wireless microphones, ceremony rigs, subwoofers, uplighting, cold sparks, low fog, full production. I don’t show up light.

What type of events do you specialize in?
Luxury weddings, corporate galas, festivals, mixtapes, and private events. I’ve also performed at the Marine Corps Ball for five consecutive years.I move where the energy is.

Legacy and What’s Next

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
That DJ Undaground never folded, elevated the wedding space, respected the culture, and helped other DJs level up without ego.

What’s next for you?
Continuing with the Fleet DJs, hosting the Tales From Da Undaground weekly mix show, expanding production collaborations, and growing the brand globally. The movement continues.

Beginnings and Inspiration

What is your name, and when did DJing become more than just a hobby?
My name is Chiara Johnson, also known as D Mona Jay. I started DJing in 1995 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. I was trained at ECSU as a radio personality at WRVS 89.9. That’s when DJing became more than just a hobby for me.

What inspired you to become a DJ?
My love for music inspired me. I played three instruments and was in band from age 12 to 22. I didn’t see a long-term future in that path, but I still wanted to remain connected to music. After graduating, I continued DJing at the radio station just to stay part of it.

Sound and Style

How would you describe your DJ style and sound?
I would describe my style as radio DJ energy with an old-school foundation. My sound leans toward nostalgia, reggae, and Afrobeats. I love making people reminisce through music.

I fell in love with reggae and Afrobeats because of my husband. He opened a reggae club that was successful until quarantine. During that time, I taught him how to DJ. The club eventually transitioned to new owners, and that chapter ended. We later moved to Las Vegas, and shortly after, he passed away.

What separates you from other DJs in Las Vegas?
My ear for music. I’m a perfectionist, and I don’t like it when something doesn’t sound right. I critique myself constantly and always look for ways to improve.

Approach and Performance

Are you more of a crowd reader, or do you plan your sets in advance?
I used to rely more on reading the crowd when my vision was stronger. I’m legally blind in my right eye, so now I plan my sets in advance. However, I’ll still adjust if the moment calls for it.

What’s one record that always moves the crowd?
Any current line dance record will move the crowd. I can’t name just one song, but if I’m playing line dance music, it always gets people engaged.

Have you ever had to recover from a technical issue during a live set?
Yes. One time in a club, my computer wouldn’t load songs onto the deck. I got on the mic, apologized, and explained the issue. I had to restart my laptop. Once it rebooted, I jumped right back into the set. On the inside, I was panicking.

What has been your biggest career milestone?
Receiving DJ of the Year in 1998 for my show “The Hip Hop Connection” at WRVS 89.9 was a major milestone for me.

How do you stay current with new music and trends?
I stay current by listening to different streaming platforms and paying attention to what’s being released. Some newer music can be hard to connect with, but I still make the effort to stay aware.

What advice would you give to new DJs entering the industry?
Build your skills and trust your ears. Many DJs rely heavily on technology, but people want to hear good music. As DJs, it’s our job to blend and transition smoothly so the music feels continuous.

How important is branding and image in today’s DJ culture?
Branding is very important. It helps build recognition and a following. Once your name is out there, people start requesting you for events. In entertainment, maintaining a strong image keeps the bookings coming.

Equipment and Specialization

Are you a controller DJ or a turntable purist? What’s your setup?
I’m a controller DJ. As a radio DJ, I learned how to use turntables, CDs, digital systems, and even 8-track machines. I taught myself how to use a controller.

My setup includes a Numark Mix Pro III, my MacBook, purple headphones, Gemini speakers, and a subwoofer. I also have a mini party mixer that I use at home.

What type of events do you specialize in?
I specialize in radio, but I’ve also worked in clubs and at pop-up events.

What legacy do you hope to leave in the DJ community?
I want people to say D Mona Jay was a great DJ with style, grace, and charisma. She was a mother, a teacher, a DJ, and an artist.

What upcoming events should people look out for?
I’ll be hosting Paint N Party Remix at the DJ Museum in Las Vegas on March 7 at 1 PM PST. It’s a paint-and-sip experience centered around DJ culture, music, and art.
