Sis, Making Friends in Atlanta After 40 Just Got Easier, and Black Women Are Showing Up in Numbers.

Black women over 40 in Atlanta gathered together smiling and celebrating at a sold-out Us Over 40s Friends Group event

In One of America’s Loneliest Cities, a Black Woman Over 40 Quietly Built a Sisterhood. Atlanta Showed Up.

In the city of Atlanta, a quiet epidemic of loneliness is taking hold. In 2024, Atlanta ranked 4th on the Chamber of Commerce’s list of loneliest cities in America. For Black women over 40 living in Atlanta, this statistic might simply confirm what they already feel. Despite all the busy activity, there is a quiet sadness that people often hide.

Shannon Handy, @mamaauntiegrandma, felt it too. So instead of just ignoring the issue that is causing many to silently suffer, she created a space where nobody has to explain why they showed up alone. The “Us Over 40s” Friends Group is a community created exclusively for black women over 40 in Atlanta. The refreshing part is that there is no hidden agenda, just sister friends showing up for each other.

And Atlanta has shown up right back. Every event Shannon has hosted has sold out. Not once, but consistently.

For a lifestyle curator, content creator, and community builder who has spent years championing Black women through her platform Black Luxury On A Budget, it comes as no surprise. She has always known where the need was. She just decided to do something about it.

We sat down with Shannon Handy to talk about why she built it, what she is witnessing happen inside it, and where it’s headed next.

@mamaauntiegrandma We have created something very special!šŸ¤Ž A friendship group for black women over 40 in Atlanta. Sis, if you're ok with possibly a little bit of cussing, some wine sipping & prayer all in one event, then let's get together! We are getting together again on Saturday November 15th from 12p-3p for a private event in Buckhead. This is our final event of the year. New things will be coming next year!šŸ¤Ž A friendship group for Ladies over 40 in Atlanta. If you want to build new friendships with other likeminded women over 40 and find some new sister-friends, come hang with us. And don't worry about arriving alone… you might find your new sister-friend on the way walking in! Ladies over 40 in Atlanta If you’re looking to build new friendships and find some new sister-friends, join us. The Us Over 40s Friends Group – Atlanta.šŸ¤Ž Here, we listen and we don't judge. #events #friendship #womenover40 #over50women ♬ We Are One – Maze & Frankie Beverly

Life Over 40 Is Different: Why It All Started

Why was it so important for you to create Us Over 40s?

Listen. I’m a black woman over 40, actually over 50, and I myself was in the same position. Needing sisterhood. It’s like after some of the dust settles, and we’re ”less'” in survival mode, so many of us look around and realize we’re by ourselves. And that doesn’t necessarily mean being alone or single. It’s all relative. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of us are married, building/supporting our children, families, ending or starting new careers and businesses; some of us are managing illness (family or self), addressing death and immortality, let me not get too deep.

It’s just that life over 40 is different. By then, life is usually life’ing. Responsibility is sometimes heavier. And we’re learning new ways to navigate. Through the transition, most times old friends have fallen off, for reasons or no reasons at all! We look around, and it’s just “YOU”. But it’s a newer, refreshed version of “YOU”. And once space has opened and there is room, this group is here to offer new friendships, new sisterhoods. What I call “Sister-friends.” That’s why I created The “‘Us Over 40s” Friends Group in Atlanta. I also created the group in memory of my 80-year-old mother, but that’s a longer story for another day… I don’t want to start ugly-face crying.

How has founding this group reflected your own personal journey as a woman over 40?

Founding this group has opened me up. As a direct result of this group, I have begun building and cultivating my own personal relationships with other sisters in Atlanta. I have formed some solid friendships!

Black women over 40 in Atlanta seated and smiling together at a Us Over 40s Friends Group friendship event

Why It’s So Hard to Make Friends in Atlanta After 40

For Black women over 40 in Atlanta, the feeling of isolation does not always look like being alone. Sometimes it looks like being the busiest person in the room.

What gap did you see in the community that this group actually fills?

So many of us have become introverts, even if we’re busy! We’re uncomfortable being in social circles, and many of us don’t want to be hurt or disappointed, like we were in past relationships. When you come to our events, when you come to hang with us, we welcome you where you are and with open arms. All you’ve got to do is walk through the door, sis!

Why is community especially important for women entering their 40s and beyond?

It’s just a safe space. A safe space for us. That’s all I can say. A place where you can come and connect, decompress, learn, laugh, cry, share, jam, and party. We have so much fun. And I always try to make sure that each queen gets a hug around their neck from me. I have so many sisters wanting us to create a chapter where they are, like Houston, Chicago, LA, Jersey, Charlotte! Part of my plan for the group later this year is to branch out and take us to other cities for a one-day event. Like a mini-tour!

Proof That It’s Working, From Strangers to Sister-Friends.

What has been the most meaningful connection or story you’ve witnessed come out of these gatherings?

Oh, baybee, the group is doing what it’s meant to do! Many sisters are building their own friendships outside of the group after meeting inside the group. One of my good girlfriends from the group met up with her family member at our event after coming separately, with no idea the other would be there.

And then also, a few weeks ago at our last event, a beautiful sister from Montgomery, Alabama, found our event during a solo weekend trip to Atlanta. She connected with a few ladies at the table she was sitting at. The connection was so strong for them that she has traveled back here twice just to spend time with them!

If You’ve Been on the Fence

What would you say to women who feel isolated or hesitant to step into a space like this?

Just step on out, sis. Park and come on in. We got the rest. We got you!

Where “Us Over 40’s” Is Headed

This group was founded exclusively for Black Women over 40 looking to build friendships and sisterhood with like-minded women. There are so many other groups out here for those who are looking to network, date, promote products, and so on. But for my sisters over 40 looking for a genuine one-on-one connection, that’s what we are all about. I believe that abundant friendships will continue to grow from the “Us Over 40s” Friends Group in Atlanta. And I hope to pass the baton on someday.Ā

But there is one challenge she hopes to solve. Which is finding dining and business establishments in Atlanta willing to host more events, she hopes to one day have a venue of her own where the “Us Over 40s” ladies in Atlanta can always come to. The “Us Over 40s” Friends Group is a proven, sold-out community who show up and keeps coming back. For the right business owner, opening their doors to this group is not just goodwill; it is good business.

I Showed Up and Felt It

I went into this story with curiosity and came out of it with new aunties!

Before attending one of Shannon’s events, I spent time going through her TikTok page, @mamaauntiegrandma, and even through a screen, the need was undeniable. Watching women find each other, laugh together, and exhale in a space that was built just for them, it was emotional. More emotional than I expected. Then I showed up in person to cover the event, and I felt it.

The energy in that room was something I genuinely did not anticipate. These women walked in as strangers and moved through the space like they had known each other for years. They ate, played games, and danced to good old school jams. Every smile in that room was real. Not that “politically correct, I’m being polite” kind of smile. A REAL SMILE.

I spoke to many of them about their experience, and what I kept hearing was the same thing: relief. Relief that a space like this exists. Relief that someone finally built it.

I am not over 40, but I left that event with a few new aunties and a full heart. Shannon Handy built something rare. A room with no negativity, no agenda, and no pretending. Just women who needed each other, finally in the same place at the same time. If that sounds like something you need, the door is open.

How Dr. Andrea L. Russell Turns Poetry into Healing, Faith, and Purpose

Writing from the Soul

Dr. Andrea L. Russell’s poetry is rooted in real-life experiences, the kind that shape how people see themselves, their faith, and their purpose. Her work leans into those moments most people don’t always say out loud, giving them space on the page.

What started as a way to process her own thoughts has grown into something that resonates with a wider audience. Readers connect with her writing because it feels honest and familiar, touching on healing, growth, and the ups and downs that come with both.

Through her poetry, Dr. Russell creates room for reflection without overcomplicating the message. It’s not about saying everything perfectly; it’s about saying something real.

Her words explore themes such as faith and spiritual reflection, self-discovery, personal growth, Love, strength, and perseverance.

Readers often describe her work as both comforting and thought-provoking, the kind of poetry that makes you pause, reflect, and see your own life through a different lens.

A Journey of Purpose

While many writers discover poetry as a hobby, for Dr. Russell, it became a calling.

Her writing grew from a desire to express truth and to share messages that could uplift others. Over time, that passion evolved into a platform that allows her to connect with audiences far beyond the page.

Today, Dr. Russell’s work reaches readers, listeners, and communities who find inspiration in her words.

Her poetry speaks not only to individual experiences but to universal human emotions, reminding readers that they are not alone in their journeys.

Through the Eyes of the Poet

A Message That Matters

In today’s fast-paced world, Dr. Russell’s poetry offers something increasingly rare: a moment to slow down and truly feel.

Her work reminds readers that words still have power, the power to heal, to inspire, and to transform.

Through her poetry, Dr. Andrea L. Russell continues to prove that creative expression can be more than art.

It can be a light for others.

And through that light, readers are reminded that even in life’s most challenging moments, beauty, hope, and purpose can still be found.

Sa-Roc at Moon Bloom Festival June 26th-28th: Lyricism & Community Advocacy

Sa-Roc wearing a red wide-brim hat and multicolored patterned jacket, posing against a gray backdrop with long locs and gold hoop earrings.

In a festival space built around intention and connection, Sa-Roc is a natural fit. The D.C.-bred lyricist is slated to perform at the Moon Bloom Festival, a gathering known for blending music with environmental awareness and community-centered programming. The festival’s setting, held at Magic Forest Farm in Coeymans Hollow, leans towards an intimate, wooded, and very intentional atmosphere, and with that kind of atmosphere, it absolutely suits an artist who built her career on lyrical discipline.

A Pen That Doesn’t Waste Words

Sa-Roc grew up in Southeast Washington, D.C., where early exposure to go-go rhythms, poetry, and grounding shaped her creative lens. She signed with Rhymesayers Entertainment in 2016, becoming one of the few women on the label’s roster at the time. The move expanded her reach while keeping her grounded in lyric-driven hip hop. Prior to the release of The Sharecropper’s Daughter, she independently released twelve full-length albums. Those projects predate songs like “Forever” and “Goddess Gang”, records that introduced her to a broader audience.

Recently, she reminded her tribe and newer members of her tribe that an entire body of work exists before her breakout moment. She announced a limited-time offer, making all twelve pre- Sharecroppers Daughter albums available as a bundle for $50, distributed directly through her team via email and Cash App.

The Sound and Discipline Behind the Name

Her 2020 album, The Sharecropper’s Daughter, marked a defining moment. The project threads through her upbringing, inherited narratives, body image struggles, and personal reclamation. The entire album is structured and deliberate. She allows space for lines to land for the listener. You truly breathe in, her expression.

The single “Forever” carried a message of self-worth that resonated widely, pushing her into broader conversations without taking away from her genuine aura. Even as her visibility increased, her style remained anchored in dense wordplay and cadence. She stands firm in her delivery as she articulates each line clearly.

Community Alignment and Advocacy

Sa-Roc evidently serves as an ambassador for Hip Hop Is Green, a nonprofit that connects hip hop culture with plant-based education, food justice initiatives, and environmental awareness. The organization works to increase access to health literacy and sustainable practices in communities that have historically lacked those resources.

Her alignment with Hip Hop is Green reflects themes present throughout her catalog. She frequently speaks about accountability, wellness, and internal work during interviews and public appearances. The partnership extends those conversations into tangible community engagement.

What Moon Bloom Represents

Moon Bloom is a community-driven festival, a give-back initiative rather than a profit-driven event. In public remarks, they emphasize that investing in Moon Bloom supports more than artist bookings or production costs. The festival operates with a donation model, in which 100% of profits are redistributed.

Half of the profits support food security efforts in the Northeast. 25% is directed to the Eden’s Rose Foundation in Albany, New York, contributing to the development of a community food forest. Another 25% goes to Project Bread in Massachusetts, an organization focused on addressing hunger and expanding access to nutritious food.

The remaining 50% funds the launch of a 501(c)(3) initiative called Restoration Creatorship. This effort is overall centered on restoring Indigenous tools and resources. The goal is to create accessible spaces for natural healing, ecological regeneration, and community restoration.

Moon Bloom is a retreat-meets-festival experience. Moon Bloom focuses on regeneration, food access, and reconnection to land stewardship. The structure of the event reflects gratitude and generosity, directing its financial returns towards regional hunger and the development of long-term restorative programming as opposed to private gain.

Alignment & Action

Sa-Roc’s presence within that framework feels aligned. Her catalog is all about reflection and internal work; her advocacy connects music to lived responsibility. Her career spans more than a decade of independent releases, label partnerships, and community alignment.

At Moon Bloom, she enters a space built around intention. Her performance will sit inside a festival model that channels its profits toward food access and restorative initiatives.

VIBE CHECK INTERVIEW: Sadie Star

Can you walk us through a major challenge or a moment you almost quit, and how you overcame it?

There was a season in radio where I felt overlooked and undervalued. Putting in the work. Showing up consistently. Still not seeing the growth expected. Remember thinking, ā€œMaybe this just isn’t for me.ā€

Instead of quitting. I got quiet and got strategic. Invested in myself, sharpened my skills, expanded my network, and reminded myself why I started. I realized my calling wasn’t validated by a title or applause. It was validated by impact. Once I shifted my mindset from recognition to purpose, everything changed. I stopped chasing and started building.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about the industry or yourself?

The most surprising thing I’ve learned is that talent is only part of the equation. Consistency, relationships, and resilience matter just as much.

About myself? Learned I’m stronger than I thought. I used to second-guess my voice, literally and figuratively. Now I understand that my authenticity is my power. The industry may evolve, but being real never goes out of style.

What advice would you give someone starting in radio today?

Learn everything, not just how to talk on air. Learn production, branding, social media, contracts, marketing, and audience engagement. Be more, be a personality, be a brand.

Don’t wait for permission. Create your own content. Build your own platform. And most importantly, protect your integrity. Reputations will walk into rooms before you do.

How do you handle on-air criticism or listener complaints?

First, I listen. Every complaint isn’t an attack; sometimes it’s feedback. Constructive. Grow from it. Negativity. Don’t internalize it.

You can’t work in media and expect everyone to love you. My job isn’t to be liked by everyone; it’s to serve the audience with authenticity and professionalism.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about your job?

People think radio is easy, that we show up and talk. What they don’t see is the prep, the research, the emotional energy, the brand partnerships, the community involvement, and the constant pressure to stay relevant.

It’s entertainment, yes. It’s business.

What motivates you to get up and do the show every day?

Impact. Knowing someone might be driving to work discouraged, and something I say shifts their day, that matters.

Radio is intimate. People invite us into their cars, homes, and routines. That responsibility motivates me to show up with excellence.

Protect your integrity. Reputations will walk into rooms before you do.

Sadie Star

How do you balance your public persona with your private life?

I’ve learned boundaries are necessary. Share inspiration and parts of my journey, but everything isn’t for public consumption.

The key is remembering that Sadie is the personality. Sadie, the woman are connected. They’re not in the same role. Protecting my peace allows me to perform at my best publicly.

What’s a recent personal growth moment or something you’ve had to unlearn?

I had to unlearn the idea that I had to prove myself constantly. Not every room requires explanation. Not every opportunity requires overexertion.

Grown into understanding. The Alignment is an important aspect.

What’s one thing you want listeners to take away from your show or our conversation?

That you can reinvent yourself, your past doesn’t limit your future. Growth is possible at any stage. I evolve. I pivot and pursue new dreams.

What’s coming up next for you that you’re excited about?

I’m stepping into acting and stage plays, expanding beyond radio into performance and storytelling in a new way. Exciting. It stretches me creatively and allows me to connect with audiences on a different level.

How can listeners connect with you online?

Hoover’s Comeback: Who Do We Thank…Trump?!

A New Era for Chicago and Beyond: Larry Hoover is Free

In a historic move that has sent shockwaves through Chicago and resonated around the globe, President Donald Trump granted a full pardon to Larry Hoover, the notorious leader of the Gangster Disciples. After decades of incarceration, Hoover’s release has ignited a fervent discussion about his legacy, influence, and what lies ahead for both him and the communities he has impacted.

Larry Hoover

A Long Road to Redemption

Larry Hoover, originally sentenced to prison in 1973 for murder, was a prominent figure in Chicago’s gang landscape. His conviction was not merely for a singular act of violence but stemmed from his leadership role in the Gangster Disciples, a group known for its power and influence in the city. In a later indictment, Hoover was sentenced to life in prison on federal racketeering charges in 1995, accused of continuing to lead gang operations from behind bars. His long journey through the judicial system reflects the complexities surrounding gang culture, crime, and the pursuit of justice.

The Pardon that Shook the Foundations

When news of Hoover’s pardon broke, it was met with a mixture of jubilation and apprehension. In Chicago, supporters celebrated what they viewed as a long-overdue recognition of Hoover’s potential for positive change. On the other hand, critics raised concerns about the implications of releasing a figure associated with violence and organized crime.

The city stands at a crossroads, grappling with questions of public safety, gang cooperation, and community empowerment. How will Hoover’s return impact a city that has long been shaped by his influence?

Larry Hoover

A Voice for the Voiceless

Larry Hoover’s story resonates deeply within the African American community, both in Chicago and globally. His early activism highlighted systemic injustices, including economic disparity and police violence, and he became a symbol of resistance for many marginalized individuals. Even from prison, Hoover maintained a cultural presence, influencing music and literature through references to his life experiences.

For many, he transitioned from a gang leader to an advocate for unity and empowerment. Hoover’s capacity to engage with rival groups has also marked him as a unique figure capable of fostering dialogue and collaboration. His ability to negotiate peace agreements between conflicting factions has the potential to influence gang dynamics positively. Many hope that upon his release, Hoover can help bridge divides not only among gangs in Chicago but also in larger discussions about unity within the African American community worldwide.

Larry Hoover

Family First: A Desire for Home

As Larry Hoover steps back into society at 71 years old, his family waits eagerly for his return. His wife and son, Larry Hoover Jr., have emphasized the personal aspect of his release. In interviews, they have expressed that Hoover’s foremost wish is to come home to his family. They are hopeful that this new chapter will provide the opportunity for reconciliation and healing, allowing him to be a grandfather, a husband, and a father.

What’s Next for Larry Hoover?

The question on everyone’s mind is, “What will Larry Hoover do next?” With his release, Hoover has an opportunity to redefine himself and leverage his influence for positive change. Many hope he will become a mentor to at-risk youth, promoting non-violence and community development. His reputation can be a powerful tool for fostering dialogue among rival gangs, emphasizing economic empowerment rather than conflict.

Cooperation Among Gangs

One of the most pressing concerns is how Hoover’s release will affect existing gang dynamics in Chicago. Many see him as a bridge-builder, capable of facilitating discussions between rival groups. Under his leadership, there may be opportunities to foster cooperation among gangs, focusing on community improvement and reducing violence. The vision of a united front against poverty and inequality could pave the way for a new era in Chicago’s neighborhoods.

The Terms of Hoover’s Release

Larry Hoover’s release comes with specific terms. As part of the pardon, he may face restrictions on political involvement and other factors that could complicate his reintegration. Understanding and adhering to these terms will be crucial in proving his commitment to a new life.

In a world where his every move will be scrutinized, how Hoover chooses to leverage his influence can have significant repercussions. Not only for himself but for the community he hopes to serve.

The Future Awaits

As Larry Hoover steps back into society, the world watches with bated breath. His past is marked by violence and control, but his potential for redemption and leadership shines through. Chicago, a city shaped by his complex legacy, stands to either heal or continue along its tumultuous path, depending on the choices he makes in this new chapter of his life.

Shedeur Sanders: The Fifth-Round Surprise and What It Means for the Cleveland Browns

In a surprising turn of events during the 2025 NFL Draft, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, known for his impressive college career and familial football legacy, was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round. While many speculated he would go much earlier, Sanders’ selection has generated a mix of excitement and curiosity about what this means for both the player and the franchise.

Shedeur Sanders

The Build-Up to the Draft

Shedeur Sanders, son of Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, had a standout career at Jackson State University, where he shattered records and showcased a blend of poise, athleticism, and exceptional football IQ. Leading his team to multiple wins and garnering national attention, he quickly became one of the most talked-about quarterbacks entering the draft.

Shedeur Sanders

Despite his accolades and potential, questions regarding his transition to the NFL level lingered. Specifically concerning his performance against top-tier opponents and the strength of schedule at a historically black college and university (HBCU).

A Surprising Fall

As the draft unfolded, analysts and fans were left stunned as Shedeur slipped past the first four rounds. Teams that needed a quarterback opted for other prospects, leaving Sanders to wait longer than anticipated in the green room.

The reasons behind his unexpected drop are multifaceted. Some insiders pointed to concerns about his mechanics, consistency under pressure, and adaptability to various offensive schemes. Others speculated about the impact of playing at an HBCU, which may have influenced scouts’ evaluations.

Shedeur Sanders

Cleveland’s Bold Move

When the Cleveland Browns finally called Shedeur’s name in the fifth round, it marked not only a pivotal moment for Sanders but also a potentially strategic move for the franchise. With veteran quarterback Deshaun Watson currently leading the team, the Browns have been looking for a young quarterback to develop behind him. Selecting Sanders could be a stroke of genius, especially if they believe they can refine his game.

Head Coach Kevin Stefanski expressed enthusiasm about adding Sanders to the roster. ā€œWe see immense potential in Shedeur. His experience and competitiveness will serve him well as he adapts to the NFL,ā€ he stated in a post-draft press conference.

What Sanders Brings to the Table

Sanders’ strengths lie in his versatility and playmaking ability. He possesses a strong arm and is capable of making all the throws required at the professional level. Moreover, his history of playing under pressure—both from opponents and the media spotlight—provides him with a level of resilience often lacking in younger quarterbacks. ā€œHe’s got that ā€˜it’ factor,ā€ said a scout. ā€œYou watch him, and you can see he has the potential to grow into a franchise quarterback if given the right guidance.ā€

Shedeur Sanders

The Road Ahead

While Shedeur’s journey is just beginning, he’ll have the chance to learn from veterans and coaches in Cleveland. They are eager and committed to helping him succeed. When he steps onto the practice field, the focus will be on honing his skills. Getting him to adapt to the speed of the NFL game. With the added pressure of being a highly scrutinized prospect, Shedeur knows that proving critics wrong will be part of his narrative. ā€œI’m ready to work hard and earn my spot,ā€ he remarked after the selection. ā€œI believe in myself, and I’m excited to show what I can do.ā€

Conclusion

The Cleveland Browns’ decision to select Shedeur Sanders could prove to be a game-changer for the organization. If he adapts and develops into the player many believe he can be, this pick will solidify his status as a cornerstone for the franchise. As fans await the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Sanders to see how he navigates this new chapter of his football journey.
