The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams would face off in the second game of the NFC wild card round yesterday. The Lions (12-5) were the #3 seed coming into this game and were seeking their first playoff win in 32 years. Los Angeles (10-7) were the #6 seed. This was also Rams QB Matthew Stafford’s first return to Ford Field.

This game was a close one unlike most of the games that took place this weekend. In the first quarter Detroit would score on two rushing touchdowns from Jahmyr Gibbs & David Montgomery. The score was 14-3 after a Rams field goal from Brett Maher. The second quarter would see Rams QB Matthew Stafford fight to pull his team closer.

Stafford would connect on two big touchdown passes in the second quarter. A 50 yard pass to Puka Nacua and a 38 yard strike to Tutu Atwell would pull the Rams closer. Going into halftime, the Lions were leading 21-17.

LIONS DEFENSE TAKES A STAND

The third quarter would prove to be a defensive one as neither team would score a touchdown. The only scores would come from special teams as the Rams & Lions would both score field goals. Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson had a remarkable game to cap off an incredible regular season. Hutchinson recorded 2 QB sacks and 4 QB hits on Stafford.

Stafford’s return wasn’t his best outing as he would be shut out in the second half. Rams QB Jared Goff on the other hand (22-22, 277yds, 1TD) was perfect simply because the Rams didn’t pressure him.

The atmosphere in Ford Field was electric as fans have been waiting for a Lions playoff win since they beat the Dallas Cowboys 38-6 back in 1991.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The Green Bay Packers would head to Texas to take on the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round of the NFL playoffs. The Cowboys (12-5) were the #2 seed and heavily favored to win at home. The Packers (9-8) were the #7 seed and have been on an uptick behind QB Jordan Love.

Green Bay would strike first on an Aaron Jones 3 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. After Jones scored again on a run in the second quarter, Love would throw his first of three touchdown passes in the game to Dontayvion Wicks to make the score 20-0. The Cowboys turn on offennse resulted in a Dak Prescott interception that was returned for a score.

While the Cowboys would score to end the half, the score was 27-7. The Packers seemed primed to end this game early.

Love would throw his 3rd touchdown pass of the game to Lou Dobbs early in the fourth quarter, making the score 48-16. The Cowboys woud try to pull close with Prescott throwing two touchdown passes to Jake Ferguson but, his two interceptions in the game would prove to be their undoing.

Dolphins Crushed By Chiefs 26-7 In Coldest Game of the Season

The Miami Dolphins & Kansas City Chiefs were one of two games that kicked off Wild Card Saturday of the NFL Playoffs today. The weather outside proved to be frightful. Because of inclement weather another playoff scheduled game (Bills vs. Steelers) was postponed until Monday afternoon.

The Chiefs and Dolphins would take the field with temperature of -4 (-27 wind chill) at kickoff. USA Today reports that Coach Andy Reid’s mustache had been covered by icicles for three quarters. Miami could not get their offense together as they only produced one passing touchdown by Tyreek Hill.

Chiefs K Harrison Butker

Kansas City would have kicker Harrison Butker to thank for another great playoff performance as his 4 field goals tonight would set a Chiefs postseason record. The rest of the game would see the Dolphins struggle to do anything with the ball offensively.

HOW BAD WAS IT FOR MIAMI?

The Dolphins would freeze up similar to the weather they played in. Miami went 1-12 on third down conversions. Besides the touchdown from Hill in the first half, Miami would have less than 100 yards of total offense going into the fourth quarter.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

With this loss the Dolphins’ season has come to a cold, bitter end. After being in control of their playoff destiny last month, Miami has seen their playoff hopes dashed in the wild card round for the second year in a row.

The Chiefs move on to the AFC Divisional Round, where a number of outcomes await the reigning Super Bowl Champions. Going to Buffalo next would be Mahomes’s first road playoff game. They could also end up staying at home to face a Houston Texans team that is on a tear in the playoffs right now.

Texans Punish Browns 45-14, Advance to Divisional Round

BROWNS vs. TEXANS | SUPER WILD CARD SATURDAY

The Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans kicked off Wild Card Saturday of the NFL Playoffs this afternoon. The Browns (11-6) came into this game as the 5th seed, while the Texans (10-7) were the 4th seed. On paper it would be a formidable match between two hungry AFC teams.

It would begin as a close matchup. Cleveland would score in the first quarter off a Kareem Hunt touchdown. Houston would answer with C.J Stround finding Nico Collins for a score late in the quarter. The second quarter saw the Texans gather steam on offense. Stroud would throw for two more big touchdowns to make the score 24-14 at halftime.

HOUSTON DEFENSE TOO MUCH FOR BROWNS

In the third quarter, the Texans defense would also put points on the board. Browns QB Joe Flacco would throw not one, but two costly interceptions that were ran back for scores. The first came from Steve Nelson for 82 yards and the second pick was returned by Christian Harris for 36 yards.

(Video Cred: ESPN)

With the score 38-14 going into the fourth quarter, any hope of a comeback in this game for Cleveland was all but lost.

The last score of this contest came from the Texans as RB Devin Singletary would score on a 19 yard run early in the 4th quarter. Even with the magic that Flacco and the Browns had going into the game, it wasn’t enough to slow the momentum of a Texans team that is riding an incredible wave with their rookie QB and rookie coach Demarco Ryan.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE TEXANS

Texans QB C.J. Stroud

With this win the Houston Texans will advance to the AFC Divisional Round. Because the NFL re-seeds in the playoffs, the Texans’ opponent will not be known until all Wild Card games are completed. With a victory, the Texans would travel to Baltimore, Buffalo, Kansas City, or host Miami.

Stroud would also become the youngest NFL QB in history to win a playoff game. Houston will hit the road and face the top-seeded Ravens in Baltimore IF the Chiefs AND Bills both win their home playoff games. The Texans will go to Buffalo next week if the Bills beat the Steelers, and the Dolphins beat the Chiefs. The Texans play at Kansas City if the Chiefs win and the Bills lose to Pittsburgh.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals met in a Week 17 matchup with huge playoff implications on the line. The Bengals were fighting for their chance to make the postseason coming into today’s game with an 8-7 record. The Chiefs (9-6) would need to win this game in order to secure the AFC West title.

In a very tight game it was Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker who would decide the outcome of the game. His career-best 6 for 6 on field goal attempts would push Kansas City to a 25-17 victory.

Rough Night For The Bengals

This high stakes game was not without its moments. Midway through the game, tensions ran high as Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and the Chiefs’  L’Jarius Sneed got into a heated argument, and eventually a team-wide scrum resulted in offsetting personal fouls.

After falling behind 17-10 the Chiefs began to apply pressure. ESPN reports that they stuffed the Bengals on fourth-and-1 at the Kansas City 6, then drove 82 yards for Butker’s third field goal. And after the Bengals had to punt, Mahomes hit Rashee Rice for 67 yards to set up Butker’s chip shot and give the Chiefs the lead for good.

The Dallas Cowboys hosted the Detroit Lions tonight as the regular season is winding down. Both teams have punched their respective tickets to the playoffs. The Lions were 11-4 coming into tonights game while the Cowboys boasted a 10-5 record.

Cowboys WR Ceedee Lamb had a remarkable game. He would secure the first touchdown for Dallas on a 92 yard touchdown pass from Dak Prescott. He finished the game with 13 catches for 227 yards and broke two of Michael Irvins’s single season club records from 1995.

What Cost The Lions The Game

Lions QB Jared Goff
Lions QB Jared Goff argues with official (Photo Cred: USA Today)

With Detroit trailing 20-13 in the fourth quarter, Lions QB Jared Goff led his team down the field with under a minute to go in the game and no timeouts. He would connect on three passes that took them down to the red zone. Goff would then connect with Amon-Ra St. Brown for an 11 yard touchdown pass, making the score 20-19.

This is where things would take a turn.

Instead of kicking a field goal that would have tied the game and sent it to overtime, Detroit went aggressive and attempted a two-point conversion. Goff threw a pass to lineman Taylor Decker, but he was ruled to be an ineligible receiver.

After the penalty the Lions went for 2 again from the 7-yard line and were stopped on an interception that didn’t even reach the end zone, but the Cowboys were called for offsides. On a last ditch effort, Goff threw a pass to James Mitchell but it would fall incomplete and that sealed the game.

What’s Next For Dallas & Detroit

With Week 18 on the horizon, The Cowboys (11-5) will head to Washington next week to play the Commanders. Detroit (11-5) will host the Minnestota Vikings. The Lions secured the NFC North and are the #3 seed behind the 49ers and Eagles.

Dallas is cuurently in a dead heat with the Eagles to secure the NFC East crown. The Cowboys need to win their game next week and hope that the Eagles lose to the Cardinals to take the division.

There are several people talking about the controversial end to this game. What do you think of the outcome? Check out this video of Troy Aikman and Joe Buck with their thoughts on the game down below.

Journalist Bae | FSU College Football Diss @TrubLyfe

Straight Official Magazine Logo

Let me tell you something, bae. The 2023 football season is not over yet honey, it’s only getting MORE HEATED. Artist, Trub Lyfe included! But for this Tallahassee, Florida team, there’s forever smoke for not being included in the biggest game of college football of the year – despite being undefeated. I mean, the good thing is they still get to go to their state game, but who cares at this point! At least that’s how this FSU fan feels. Did he do this Tupac beat justice? I’m just saying he read it from top to bottom.

Florida State University (FSU) finished the U.S. college football season with a 13-0 winning record, but they were left disappointed after they failed to make the 2023 playoff. Their last two wins came without their star quarterback, Jordan Travis, who got a broken leg in the home game against North Alabama (November 18 of this year). The four (4) playoff slots are not determined solely by record, but decided by a committee of (thirteen)13 members.

Everybody and they mama is involved in this Trub Lyfe video though! I mean it. Check it out right here on Straight Official Magazine, period.

Ladies’ Guide to Football Season

This basic, yet all-inclusive football season guide is strictly for my ladies! Before we jump in, I just need to know one thing, which woman are you? A) You just need a schedule to know when you can “shenan-again” on Amazon. B) You actually want to learn something about the sport, so you sound like you know what you’re talking about. C) Football is really your thing. No matter who you are, I’m going to tell you some key points you should know and be able to identify. ‘Tis the major season… Let’s make it quick!

Football Season Summary

To keep it simple, NFL games air on Sunday (SNF), Monday (MNF), and Thursday (TNF)- that doesn’t mean that other leagues aren’t playing on the other days. However, for the purposes of this guide, the timeline for the season goes a little like this: Preseason in August (these are “off the record”, exhibition games, the Hall of Fame Game is a whole shebang), Regular Season Kickoff in September (which lasts until approximately the first week in January), Playoffs (which lasts the entirety of January), lastly we get to Championship games (this is going into February and ending the season with the likes of the Pro & Super Bowl).

Pro-Tip: The more wins, the higher the seed. The higher the seed, the better your chance is to make the playoffs.

There’s no real way for me to tell you which games are most important in regard to the regular season and I damn sure will not tell you which team to root for. What I can do is give you the basics!

Who’s Playing?

There are 32 teams in the league that are divided into 2 conferences made of 4 divisions with 4 teams each. Below is a visual for reference (ignore the numbers, they mean nothing to us right now). You can find official NFL team schedules that tell you when and where they play, as well as how to get tickets here.

It’s All About the Super Bowl?

Correct. The Super Bowl is essentially a battle between the best team from each conference (National Football Conference + American Football Conference). How do they decide who’s the best out of the 32? The simple answer: football Playoffs. There’s a catch though – only 14 teams make it there. The first 8 playoff spots are awarded to the teams that finish with the best record in each division. The remaining 6 spots (three from the AFC and three from the NFC) are given to the teams with the best record who did not win the highest seed in their division. The playoffs are single elimination – meaning win your game or go home! This lasts until 4 teams remain which is where we find out who advances to the Super Bowl. Once we get to the final game – it’s winner-take-all! Find out more about the 2024 Super Bowl here or check this out to see your teams Super Bowl history.

Key Terms

If football is really your thing, click here for a full football dictionary. But to save you some time – here’s a few terms you should know:

  • Blitz: when 5 or more defensive players rush the opposing quarterback, in an attempt either to tackle them or force them to hurry his pass attempt.
  • Fantasy Football: an online game where you play with the real players on a virtual platform. The points of the game are dependent on the performance of the chosen players in real-life matches.
  • Fumble: any act, other than a (forward) pass or kick, which results in a loss of player possession
  • Penalty: When either the player or coach violates the rules of the game as per the rulebook. There are 7 referees on the field and any of them have the ability to throw flag(s) on the play. The consequences vary.
  • Pocket: The area formed by the quarterback’s blockers to prevent defensive players from tackling him.
  • Quarters: Regulation time for all NFL games is 60 minutes and each game is divided into four 15-minute quarters. Of course, football is never exactly an hour – you have to account for commercials & timeouts, etc.

Did You Know? The jersey numbers that players wear are anything but random! The displayed number can allude to what position they are playing in the game.

OK, sis! I’ve given you the resources – Now, GO DO GREAT THINGS!! Best of luck!!!
