CHIEFS vs. RAVENS | AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs would kick off the NFL Championship round of the playoffs today. The Chiefs (11-6) are the defending Super Bowl Champions and beat the Buffalo Bills last week to advance. The Ravens (13-4) are back in the AFC Championship game behind MVP candidate Lamar Jackson. Their win against the Houston Texans last week punched their ticket to this round.

FIRST QUARTER HIGLIGHTS

Baltimore would receive the ball to start the game but would be forced to punt after a three-and-out. Kansas City would take over and begin their first drive on offense. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes would find TE Travis Kelce on a few plays while RB Isiah Pacheco carried the team into the red zone with some big runs. The Chiefs would cap off the drive with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Kelce. This gave them an early 7-0 lead.

The Ravens would attempt to match their score with the next possession. QB Lamar Jackson would use his arm and legs to move Baltimore down the field quickly. He would run for a big 21 yard scamper on a fourth down play that saved the drive. Jackson threw for over 60 yards on the drive including a 30 yard pass to Zay Flowers for a touchdown.

With the score tied at 7 at the end of the first quarter, the Chiefs would get into Baltimore territory after some good passes from Mahomes to WR Rahsee Rice.

SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

The Chiefs moved into the red zone behind a great catch from Kelce with Mahomes taking a big hit on defense. Mahomes used his legs as well as his arm to get Kansas City at first and goal. They finished the 16 play drive with Pacheco running in for a touchdown. The Ravens defense looked shaky and nervous as they fell behind 14-7.

The Ravens offense would turn the ball over on a fumble from Jackson which set up Kansas City at the 40 yard line. The Chiefs would use the run game to try to add to their lead. After Pacheco was stopped on a fourth down drive however, Baltimore would take the ball back. Jackson would lead his team down the field with a miraculous 13 yard pass to himself off a deflected pass. Despite his heroics, the Chiefs defense forced them to punt.

Defense was the focus from here on out. Baltimore’s defense began to come alive after stopping the Chiefs quickly on offense. Stalled drives from both teams would find the Chiefs with the ball late in the second quarter. Things got chippy as two costly penalties against Baltimore would get Kansas City going. The Chiefs offense would sputter as two penalties (one of them nullified a touchdown score) made them settle for a field goal to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.

AFTER THE BREAK

The Chiefs would receive the ball to start the third quarter. Both the Ravens and Chiefs defense would force three-and-outs resulting in punts. Defense continued to take control of the game as neither team could capitalize on offense. The Ravens defense would come alive after an impromptu apperance by Terelle Suggs would force the Chiefs to punt again late in the third quarter.

The Ravens offense found momentum late in the third quarter. Jackson would find Flowers for a 54 yard pass and another 11 yard pass to move them into the red zone to end the quarter. The Ravens would turn the ball over again, this time on a Zay Flowers fumble in the end zone recovered by the Chiefs. This resulted in Kansas City getting the ball back.

FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

Still leading by 10, Mahomes got to work quickly connecting with Kelce to start their first drive of the fourth quarter. The Ravens defense however had other plans as they forced the fourth punt from the Chiefs of the half. The Ravens moved down on the field on a 10 play drive that included a big pass from Jackson to WR Nelson Agholor. Two plays later, Jackson was intercepted by Deon Bush which gave the Chiefs the ball back.

PENALTIES COST THE RAVENS

Baltimore would have one more chance to score to close the gap. They would get to the Chiefs’ 25 yard line before being forced to kick a field goal to make the score 17-10. Penalties hurt the Ravens all game as their 8th one of the game helped fuel the Chiefs next drive. Mahomes found Marques Valdez-Scantling for a 22 yard pass to get to the two minute warning.

The Ravens found themselves with no timeouts remaining in the game. This would allow Mahomes to just kneel on the ball to run out the clock. Jackson sat on the sideline dejected as his team would only watch as Kansas City would win the AFC Championship.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

This win allows the Chiefs to move on to the Super Bowl in two weeks. This is the 4th time they have made the Super Bowl in the past 5 seasons. The Ravens season comes to an end with many of their fans wondering what happened to their momentum coming into this game.

CHIEFS vs. BILLS | AFC DIVISIONAL ROUND PLAYOFFS

The Buffalo Bills would host the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round this evening. Buffalo (11-6) is the #2 seed and advanced to this round after beating the Steelers 34-17. This game is the first road playoff game of QB Patrick Mahomes’ career.

BILLS STRIKE FIRST

The Bills would receive the ball to start the first quarter. After an early fumble by WR Stefon Diggs, the Bills would get things together on offense. They would take over 6 minutes and 14 plays to produce the game’s first points as Buffalo scored on a field goal from kicker Tyler Bass. Bills QB Josh Allen worked with his arm and his legs to push them upfield.

Kansas City would take over on offense. Mahomes would throw 3/4 and 40 yards to move them into Bills’ territory. The seven play drive would end in a field goal from Harrison Butkner, tying the game 3-3. Buffalo took over on offense and on another lenghty drive found themselves just outside the red zone to end the first quarter.

Three plays into the second quarter, Allen would cap off an 11 play drive with a 5 yard touchdown run. With the score now 10-3, Kansas City would attempt to answer with a score to pull even. After an ten play drive that stalled out due to a fumble by Mecole Hardman Jr., the Chiefs would settle for three points making the score 10-6.

JOSH ALLEN’S LEGS CARRY BILLS

The Bills would punt after a short drive on offense. Mahomes and Co. would move quickly down the field off of huge 28 yard run from Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The 5 play drive ended with Mahomes connecting with TE Travis Kelce for a 22 yard touchdown pass. Taylor Swift cheered from the press box as the Chiefs would take the lead 13-10.

Buffalo would make a last attempt to reclaim the lead before halftime. Allen found Diggs for a 15-yard first down and then hit Latavius Murray for another 15 yard strike. With under a minute to go, Allen ran for 20 yards to get them deep in the red zone. The drive would end with Allen getting his second rushing touchdown of the game and taking the lead 17-13.

With the Chiefs down 4, they would receive the ball to start the second half. Will Kansas City be able to turn it around?

The Chiefs received the ball to start the third quarter and they got to work quickly. Mahomes would use his legs and arm to move the Chiefs down the field. After finding WR Marques Valdez-Scantling for a 30 yard pass, he would run for 24 yards to get Kansas City inside the redzone. He added 14 more rushing yards before finding Kelce for his second touchdown catch of the game. This gave the Chiefs a 20-17 lead.

Buffalo’s next offensive drive gained some momentum after a penalty from Kansas City gave them good field position. RBs James Cook & Ty Johnson were utilized well on the drive. Allen threw 4 out of 5 completed passes and ended the 15 play drive with a touchdown pass to WR Khalil Shakir. This would give the Bills the lead 24-20.

The Chiefs would use their RB duo of Edwards-Helaire and Isaiah Pacheco to keep pace. Mahomes would find Valdez-Scantling again for a huge pass for 32 yards to put the Chiefs at the Buffalo 18 to end the quarter. Pacheco would then begin the fourth quarter with a 4 yard touchdown run. This gave the Chiefs the lead 27-24 and was the 7th lead change of the game!

COSTLY MISTAKES BY CHIEFS & BILLS

Down 3 early in the forth quarter, the Bills offense would stall after a incomplete pass from Allen to Diggs. They would attempt to go for it on fourth down but was unsuccessful after Damar Hamlin failed to convert on a punt fake run. This allowed the Chiefs to take possession. Pacheco would break for a big 32 yard run that got them in scoring postion.

Just when it seemed Kansas City would score again, a fumble by Hardeman would see the ball go out of bounds in the end zone. Buffalo challenged the runner was down by contact ruling, and the play was reversed. This would result in a touchback and give the Bills the ball at the 20.

After back to back punts from both teams, Buffalo would take a shot to reclaim the lead. The drive nearly came to end when Allen fumbled the ball on a run attempt. The Bills would recover and move into Chiefs territory. Allen would convert a huge 4th down attempt with a pass to Shakir. Buffalo would end up just outside the redzone as the two-minute warning stopped the game.

The Bills would try to tie the game once again with a field goal. Tyler Bass who has been perfect this playoff series, missed wide right from 44 yards out.

Now trailing 17-10 the Bucs would respond with a quick 7 play drive to tie the game again at 17. Mayfield found Otton again on three passes with two being over 15 yards apiece. He would finish the drive on a 12 yard touchdown to Rashaad White. From here the game’s tempo would go up a few notches.

BUCCANEERS FALL SHORT

With the score 31-23, the Bucs would receive the ball with less than 2 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Two plays later, Mayfield would be intercepted again, this time by Derrick Barnes to end this exciting game!

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills would be the first of two Wild Card playoff games taking place today. Incliment weather forced this game to be played today instead of yesterday. The Steelers (10-7) came into this game as the #7 seed after winning against the Ravens last week. Buffalo (11-6) snatched the #2 seed and the AFC East crown on path to this matchup.

Bills QB Josh Allen would get his team to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. His two TD passes to Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox set the tone early. The second quarter would see Allen use his legs to dissect the Steelers defense. While rushing for 74 yards total, Allen would break through lifeless tackles to scamper 52 yards for another Bills score.

Pittsburgh’s defense just could not withstand the Bills on offense. Already missing their star defensive player T.J. Watt didn’t help matters as they would give up 245 yards of total offense in the first half. The breakdown of how Kincaid’s first TD pass occured displayed a lack in coverage from the Steelers secondary.

After a third quarter of only field goals from each team, Pittsburgh would try to mount a comeback with a an early touchdown pass from Rudolph to Calvin Austin III in the fourth quarter. This would make the score 24-17. The Bills would answer with another TD pass from Allen to Khalil Shakir, putting the game on ice.

The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams would face off in the second game of the NFC wild card round yesterday. The Lions (12-5) were the #3 seed coming into this game and were seeking their first playoff win in 32 years. Los Angeles (10-7) were the #6 seed. This was also Rams QB Matthew Stafford’s first return to Ford Field.

This game was a close one unlike most of the games that took place this weekend. In the first quarter Detroit would score on two rushing touchdowns from Jahmyr Gibbs & David Montgomery. The score was 14-3 after a Rams field goal from Brett Maher. The second quarter would see Rams QB Matthew Stafford fight to pull his team closer.

Stafford would connect on two big touchdown passes in the second quarter. A 50 yard pass to Puka Nacua and a 38 yard strike to Tutu Atwell would pull the Rams closer. Going into halftime, the Lions were leading 21-17.

LIONS DEFENSE TAKES A STAND

The third quarter would prove to be a defensive one as neither team would score a touchdown. The only scores would come from special teams as the Rams & Lions would both score field goals. Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson had a remarkable game to cap off an incredible regular season. Hutchinson recorded 2 QB sacks and 4 QB hits on Stafford.

Stafford’s return wasn’t his best outing as he would be shut out in the second half. Rams QB Jared Goff on the other hand (22-22, 277yds, 1TD) was perfect simply because the Rams didn’t pressure him.

The atmosphere in Ford Field was electric as fans have been waiting for a Lions playoff win since they beat the Dallas Cowboys 38-6 back in 1991.

The Miami Dolphins & Kansas City Chiefs were one of two games that kicked off Wild Card Saturday of the NFL Playoffs today. The weather outside proved to be frightful. Because of inclement weather another playoff scheduled game (Bills vs. Steelers) was postponed until Monday afternoon.

The Chiefs and Dolphins would take the field with temperature of -4 (-27 wind chill) at kickoff. USA Today reports that Coach Andy Reid’s mustache had been covered by icicles for three quarters. Miami could not get their offense together as they only produced one passing touchdown by Tyreek Hill.

Chiefs K Harrison Butker

Kansas City would have kicker Harrison Butker to thank for another great playoff performance as his 4 field goals tonight would set a Chiefs postseason record. The rest of the game would see the Dolphins struggle to do anything with the ball offensively.

HOW BAD WAS IT FOR MIAMI?

Dolphins QB Tau Tagovaiola

The Dolphins would freeze up similar to the weather they played in. Miami went 1-12 on third down conversions. Besides the touchdown from Hill in the first half, Miami would have less than 100 yards of total offense going into the fourth quarter.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

With this loss the Dolphins’ season has come to a cold, bitter end. After being in control of their playoff destiny last month, Miami has seen their playoff hopes dashed in the wild card round for the second year in a row.

The Chiefs move on to the AFC Divisional Round, where a number of outcomes await the reigning Super Bowl Champions. Going to Buffalo next would be Mahomes’s first road playoff game. They could also end up staying at home to face a Houston Texans team that is on a tear in the playoffs right now.
