SOMag Presents The Fleet Files With Fleet DJs: DJ Starline | @djstarline.edm

For over two decades, the fleet dj’s has grown from a small crew to a proficient coalition with over 500 members and counting. since 2001, THE WORLDWIDE FLEET DJ’s has changed the lives of both its members and the entertainment industry they have thrived in.

These are the members. These are Their Stories. THESE ARE “THE FLEET FILES”

DJ Starline

Name: DJ STARLINE

FLeet DJ Since: 2007

Location: MILFORD, CONNECTICUT

Region: NORTHEAST REGION/CONNECTICUT Fleet DJ’s

WHO IS DJ STARLINE?

DJ STARLINE is an accomplished member of the Worldwide Fleet DJ’s. Since joining the coalition in 2007, she’s been acknowledged and awarded for her dedication. From her three nominations at the 2022 Fleet DJs Awards to securing the 2023 Fleet DJ Raheem MVP Award, Starline has put in the work!

I asked her when was the moment that convinced her that she wanted to be a DJ. “When I saw videos of DJ AM (R.I.P.) and A-Trak putting on a show like no other, it inspired me to do the same. Their superhuman talents, charisma and energy convinced me (an introvert at the time) that I as a DJ can grow personally and professionally while developing new skillsets and talents.”

Affectionally known as Nina, Starline was vested in becoming a DJ four years prior to joining Fleet. Seeking to know the art of DJ’ing she attended and graduated from the Scratch DJ Academy in 2006. When I asked her what drove her to join Fleet, she spoke on a conversation while working with another Fleet DJ.

“I was working on a mixtape with a Vegas DJ, King Nade. He was telling me about this new DJ crew he joined and he was going on about how awesome it was to be part of a team like this. He asked me to join, specifically saying that there were no females on the team. We got on AIM. Messenger if you could remember that (laughs). Nade, Klassik the CEO, and his partner chopped it up. Then we had a few phone calls shortly after. Each time I spoke with them I could hear the passion in their voices as they explained their vision for the organization.”

She added, “Their drive to put the DJ in the forefront, especially newer DJs, really resonated with me.”

DJ Starline

My mission is to make the world dance while forgetting about the drama. Let’s go!

DJ Starline

DJ Starline

While originally spinning Hip-Hop, Starline made a choice that would alter the course of her journey. In 2010 she would transition to electronic dance music. “I eventually made the move to electronic dance music (EDM) as the 2010s approached and to put it simple, I never looked back! I don’t regret the decision at all, just when I made that pivotal move it was only a matter of time before the actual EDM boom occurred between 2011-2013.

Currently she is the Assistant Manager of the EDM division of Fleet. In addition, Starline is the lead organizer of the Fleet DJ Raid Trains on Twitch. She remarked on her accomplishments early into her joining Fleet. “I joined the Fleet DJs and continued working while getting many opportunities to do projects with other DJ’s and artists. I provided monthly mix shows to popular stations of the time, such as, Sprint/Nextel Radio, Nokia Radio, Move Radio, Focus on the DJ and WWACN.”

DJ Starline

When I decided to DJ the first person I told was my sister. She was so excited she jumped on her laptop and started creating a logo for me. She ended up with a star and an electric line going through it. So we came up with Starline

DJ Starline on how she got her name

DJ Starline is more than just a DJ. Outside of making the world dance she works in the medical field in the Orthopedic and Pain Management specialties. She added, “I’m also a web and graphics designer and video editor.” I asked her about some of the takeaways of being a DJ. She spoke on the experience that she’s given her clients.

“Giving memorable moments to happy clients and party goers during their special occasions as well as giving my loyal listeners, on digital platforms, a in-real-life inspired experience right at home or while they’re out n about. This always means the world to me!” She added, “business relationships I’ve developed during my journey as a DJ. I’ve crossed paths with other talented DJs and music industry professionals that have open doors for me in the business world and beyond!”

When she’s not listening to hit songs like Get Lower by Steve Aoki and Lil Jon, Starline finds inspiration by simply being a watcher of the game. “From watching the world’s best DJs, I learn by observing their mixing styles and stage presence. I also gain inspiration from the Fleet DJs that I work with every day!”

As we came to the end of our interview, I asked Starline if she had any words of wisdom for aspiring DJs. “Anyone trying to make a name in any industry, especially the music industry, must embrace the concept of networking. It’s simple, just put yourself out there and network like crazy! Always be open to meeting new people and creating relationships, more importantly you have to MAINTAIN those relationships, follow-up regularly!”

I gave her the floor to give her roses. “Big shout out to Straight Official Magazine & Radio, TenthLetterMedia,  FLEET DJS, THE FLEET EDM DJs, K102 DIGITAL, TASTE/DASH RADIO, CHICAGO 77.3, FLEET EDM RADIO, CTVIBE101, THE FLEET RAID TRAIN DJs, COMMUTER TRAX, URBAN $OUND, DAPLAYLISTER, EVERY ONE I WORK WITH ON A DAILY BASIS, AND OF COURSE THE STRAIGHT OFFICIAL READERS, MY LOYAL LISTENERS, FOLLOWERS AND SUPPORTERS — THERE WOULD BE NOTHING FOR ME TO DO WITHOUT YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT, I’M TRULY GRATEFUL FOR EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU GUYS!

How You What? Naptown Delivers With The Sophomore Cypher

HOW YOU WHAT? SOPHOMORE CYPHER

The city of Indianapolis became a hot topic during last month’s All-Star weekend. Not just for basketball, the Hip-Hop world took notice to the first take of the All-Star Naptown Cypher presented by Asia & Co Productions. The consensus was that it was not a representation of the culture in the Circle City. Surely there would be a follow-up, right?

That effort dropped today as the How You What? Sophomore Cypher was released after a teaser was dropped this week via Instagram. Hosted by Naptown’s own Dead Silence, the cypher consisted of 5 MC’s, all of which are from or reside on the far east side. DJ Strick spun the instrumental for Nas’ “Oochie Wally” and the rest is history!!!

How You What? Sophomore Cypher

Jet Santiago would kick off the first leg with bars that set the tone for the cypher. Going absolutely silly over the track he solves the question about that infamous chicken. “Call me your excellency/evidently I’m a better MC/that chicken crossed the road and ran into me.” Femcee TVT The Rapper took the mic and rode the track while clearly showing that she wasn’t pressed being the only woman in the cypher. She spits “Put me in a box so blind niggas I’ma make ’em see/always the one doing the breakups/call me the referee.”

Skypp (Photo Cred: Kaymakay Designs)

Leg 3 of the cypher went to PBT Ace. His gritty, lyrical ride included both ties to both love and loyalty over these bitches. The next MC up was Skypp. Stating the obvious he spits “Yeah, took y’all long enough/Y’all know they couldn’t “rap rap” but they songs tough/I’m so NAP like the shit that makes a comb get stuck/what mufuckas ain’t puttin on like us.”

How You What? Sophomore Cypher
T.G.I. Free (Photo Cred: Kaymakay Designs)

T.G.I. Free would take the anchor of the cypher. I had the opportunity to see Free perform during All-Star Weekend for the first time alongside Jet & Skypp. He closed it out like Michael Jordan in Game 6 with powerful punchlines like “Steven Jackson in the stands/bitch I’m smacking shit/and cut me off they know I got it like I’m Kaepernick.”

As a native of Indianapolis and correspondent of Hip-Hop, THIS is how you do a cypher! But please, don’t take my word for it. Check out the official video for How You What? Sophomore Cypher down below. Let us know in the comments what you think.

Special shouts out and appreciation goes out to everyone involved with this outstanding cypher. JUSTINA VALENTINE known world wide for role on the hit improv show Wild N’ Out is making it known she has bars! The singer, television host & actor has the collective ear of Hip-Hop with a new release “Mo Money” that features Hip-Hop icon Jadakiss.

Ever since her early release “Candy Land” featuring Fetty Wap, Justina has been able to hold her own lyrically. While not adhering to the labels that come with female emcees, it allows her to focus her talent and energy on tracks with some of the game’s prominent male counterparts.

Justina Valentine

Justina Valentine feat. Jadakiss- Mo’ Money

We got to chop it up with Justina on the Fleet DJs Celebrity Corner a few weeks ago. We listened to the song and knew right away that she has bars indeed! This was definitely the right track for Jada to hop on and a dope collaboration.

Valentine has both a style and uniqueness that is a different take from the evolving female presence in Hip-Hop. It’s dope to see music make it’s way back to the front of all this noise out here currently.

Content Creator’s Corner with Chris Parker @The HLG Show

Straight Official Magazine Logo
CP HLG

MEET CP HLG

CP HLG is a talented content creator. He makes us all laugh out loud with over-the-top comedy sketches. Best known for his “Me and My Cokehead Roommate” series, the San Diego native is all across social media and becoming a staple in the content creator community.

Chris Parker has never been camera shy. “I’ve always had a knack for being on camera since I was a kid. I was always the talkative, funny person. So when my mom got a camera, I used to create my own home films with my cousin when I was younger.” CP is a creative that isn’t afraid to push the envelope to make people laugh.

CP HLG

“I would describe my content as that early 2000’s comedy. Back then, humor was no holds barred on jokes. Any and everything was up for grabs.” CP HLG uses clips from old WWE interviews with “Macho Man Randy Savage” that tie in his over the edge style of humor.”

CP HLG

His Creative Process

I asked CP HLG about his process and what inspires him to be a creative. “A great mixture of things inspire me now that didn’t catch my interest back then as times & comedic forms has changed.” Besides Eddie Griffin and “Home Alone” CP draws inspiration from the effect of his comedy on fans. “Seeing the reaction of people and my fans who really get a laugh outta my content. It really drives me to do more & more.”

CP has come a long way from his earlier days since his boom into popularity. “My routine now isn’t what it once was when I started as things have become more bigger on my platform. But I wake up early in the AM head to my living room and shoot about 4-5 videos for that day. I use my phone for literally everything (filming, editing, etc…).”

Shifting Gears

I asked CP about dealing with today’s current climate when it comes to comedy. “I’m not afraid to go a little overboard for that punch line, but today’s comedy not so much. Things are becoming more and more sensitive.” CP is grateful for his decision to pursue a lane in content creation. “Truth be told, I’d probably be bouncing from job to job. With it being hard to keep a job, content creation has really helped me in that aspect.”

CP HLG

A tree doesn’t grow overnight. It takes time, patience and most of all management. If you want to make it in this world, remember that.

CP HLG

Wrapping It Up

CP HLG has a hidden talent outside of being a content creator that came up in our convo. “A major skill of mine is that I’m AMAZING at almost any video game I touch! I can also for some remember all old school video game music (laughs).” I gave CP the floor to close out our interview.

“My final words are ones that everyone should remember. That in the times you feel like your missing everything, remember that trees lose their leaves every year AND still stand tall waiting for better days.”

The Chiefs defense would force a fumble from McCaffrey, giving them good field position for their first offensive drive.

Defense would be the theme of the first quarter as both teams would exchange punts. The 49ers would score the first points of the game off of a 55-yard field goal from kicker Jake Moody. This would be the longest field goal in Super Bowl history.

The Chiefs received the ball and Mahomes and TE Travis Kelce would finally connect. Kelce was held to just one catch for one yard in the first half. On this drive he would have two catches for 29 yards. The 49ers defense again would prove to be a problem for Mahomes. After nearly forcing him to fumble on the drive, they would sack him forcing the Chiefs to settle for a field goal that tied the game at 16.

The 49ers would take seven plays to get to the Chief 35 yard line with the two-minute warning stopping the game. Their drive would stall out, bringing out Moody to kick a 53 yard field goal and take the lead 19-16. Kansas City would take the ball with 1:50 left in the game. Mahomes would again use his arm and feet to get the Chiefs in position to either tie or win the game. Deep in the red zone, Kelce & Mahomes couldn’t connect on a touchdown pass.

With ten seconds left in the game, Butker got the call and would kick a 29 yard field goal to tie the game and send it to overtime!

OVERTIME BITES THE 49ERS

San Francisco would win the coin toss for the second time in the contest and elected to receive. Purdy got to work finding McCaffrey for a huge pass that got them to the Kansas City 26 yard line. McCaffrey then rushed to get them inside the 10 but after a incomplete pass from Purdy, Moody was brought out to kick a field goal.

This made the score 22-19 and forced the Chiefs to either tie with a kick or score a touchdown to win the game.

The Chiefs took possession and Mahomes began to work his comeback magic. On a 13 play drive that included a 19 yard run from Mahomes and backwards pass to Valdes-Scantling, the Chiefs got to the 49ers 13 yard line. Two plays later Mahomes would find WR Mecole Hardman for a touchdown pass. This would end the game with the score 25-22 and make the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl LVIII Champions!

Straight Official Sit Downs: Afro Preachah

Straight Official Magazine Logo
Afro Preachah

AFRO PREACHAH stopped by our headquarters for this edition of Straight Official Sit Downs where we spotlight emerging artists. @TenthLetterMedia got the opportunity to chop it up with him this time and the vibe was dope! Check out their one-on-one down below and click here for more Straight Official Sit Downs.

Q&A WITH AFRO PREACHAH

Introduce yourself. Tell us where you are from and what first interested you in the entertainment industry?

They call me Afro Preachah. I was born in Kansas City, KS and grew up in Missouri before moving to Minnesota. The name was given to me by my producer friend Griff.  What interested me was watching music videos from Run DMC, Public Enemy, Morris Day, Bootsy Collins.

Who or what inspires you to create?

My first inspiration was my father and grandfather.  Both are preachers. Growing up in church. The rhythm of music in general. Music, words and rhythm have been on auto play my whole life.

How would you describe your sound?

I would say it’s a fusion of then and now. Old and new.  Hip-Hop, Funk, R&B, Soul and sounds of Gospel.  So folks call is “Sexy Chuuch music”.  It makes me laugh.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Tell us about your creative process. What are your go-to’s for a session?

I like to just vibe out in my mancave when I get the music from my producers.  Play video games, watch anime, smoke one. Surround myself with art. I basically “Nerd Out” (laughs).

What artists would you like to collaborate with?

Artists I’m a fan of.include Morris Day, Tech N9ne, Trinidad James, MC Lyte, Chris Brown, 69 Boys & Bootsy Collins.

Afro Preachah

The music is for you & them, not me. The real grassroot. I’m just the vessel. I could never say thank you enough. Living my dream to do music for folks that want it is a true blessing. Gratitude.

Afro Preachah’s words to his fans

LET’S SHIFT GEARS

What’s a skill/talent that you possess that no one knows about?

I practice five different forms of Kung-Fu & Martial Arts.

If not for music, where would you be in life right now?

That’s a great question.  I’ll have to ask God and get back to you on that one.

If you could change the music industry in any way, what would you change and why?

Well, in a dream I had all labels support all artists from an independent artist aspect. Why that change? Speaking for myself, I’m an LLC. Yes, I’m an artist but business comes first.  So, presenting any kind of business that would hurt personally is off the table.

Important things artists should know. How to balance their checkbooks, understanding sync licensing to running your independent artist website. Labels offer real music business education.  In these past years in my opinion, we’ve had why to many negative outcomes in our African American entertainment community.  Label can make just as much money by educating their artists to own themselves. Then I woke up! (laughs)

Afro Preachah

WRAPPING IT UP

Do you have a new project out? If so, tell us more about it and where we can hear it.

Yes, actually a couple projects. “Watch Me” produced by @Lstmusic and “Rap Caviar” by @flamesquadDJMC. You can stream, download and watch video on www.afropreachah.com

Give us your final words. Let us know where we can follow on social media.

Detroit took control on offense trying to stifle the comeback attempt. They would find themselves in 49ers territory after a Williams catch from Goff for 22 yards and a Montgomery run for 16 yards. Instead of going for a field goal that would have tied the game, the Lions would turn the ball over on downs after another incomplete pass on fourth down.

With the score tied at 7 at the end of the first quarter, the Chiefs would get into Baltimore territory after some good passes from Mahomes to WR Rahsee Rice.

They finished the 16 play drive with Pacheco running in for a touchdown. The Ravens defense looked shaky and nervous as they fell behind 14-7.

After Pacheco was stopped on a fourth down drive however, Baltimore would take the ball back. Jackson would lead his team down the field with a miraculous 13 yard pass to himself off a deflected pass. Despite his heroics, the Chiefs defense forced them to punt.

Defense was the focus from here on out. Baltimore’s defense began to come alive after stopping the Chiefs quickly on offense. Stalled drives from both teams would find the Chiefs with the ball late in the second quarter. Things got chippy as two costly penalties against Baltimore would get Kansas City going. The Chiefs offense would sputter as two penalties (one of them nullified a touchdown score) made them settle for a field goal to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.

AFTER THE BREAK

The Chiefs would receive the ball to start the third quarter. Both the Ravens and Chiefs defense would force three-and-outs resulting in punts. Defense continued to take control of the game as neither team could capitalize on offense. The Ravens would turn the ball over again, this time on a Zay Flowers fumble in the end zone recovered by the Chiefs. This resulted in Kansas City getting the ball back.

FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

Still leading by 10, Mahomes got to work quickly connecting with Kelce to start their first drive of the fourth quarter. The Ravens defense however had other plans as they forced the fourth punt from the Chiefs of the half. The Ravens moved down on the field on a 10 play drive that included a big pass from Jackson to WR Nelson Agholor. Two plays later, Jackson was intercepted by Deon Bush which gave the Chiefs the ball back.

Penalties hurt the Ravens all game as their 8th one of the game helped fuel the Chiefs next drive. Mahomes found Marques Valdez-Scantling for a 22 yard pass to get to the two minute warning.

The Ravens found themselves with no timeouts remaining in the game. This would allow Mahomes to just kneel on the ball to run out the clock. Jackson sat on the sideline dejected as his team would only watch as Kansas City would win the AFC Championship.
